Woodside High School wins Stonewall Gold

Woodside High School has become the first London secondary school to win the prestigious Stonewall School Champion Gold award. Woodside High is only the sixth school ever to win the award, which gives greater recognition to schools tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and celebrating diversity.

Sir Ian McKellen visited Woodside High to celebrate this achievement.

Research by Stonewall shows that secondary schools that take an active, positive approach to tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic language and bullying get the best results. The Stonewall School Champions programme schools support and is aimed at creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students.

“We are absolutely delighted that Woodside High School has won the Stonewall School Champion Gold award. It is a testament to the hard work of our whole school community and our shared commitment to tackling prejudice in all its forms.”

Gerry Robinson and Elma Mc Elligott, Co-Headteachers, Woodside High School

“Stonewall are thrilled to award Woodside High School with a Gold Award in recognition for their hard work since joining the School Champions Programme. They will become the first secondary school in London to receive the award, the highest we offer in this category. I have visited Woodside personally a number of times and the happy, productive young people are testament to the hard work the faculty have put in, ensuring that every student at Woodside High is accepted without exception.”

Dominic Arnall, Head of Projects and Programmes, Stonewall

Come to Haringey's STEM Showcase in January

Greig City Academy is hosting Haringey’s first School’s STEM Showcase on Friday 19 January (10am – 3pm). This exciting event is to promote STEM in schools across Haringey.

There is a lot of great STEM development work going on in our schools and colleges but often this takes place in isolation. The STEM Showcase will be an opportunity to display and promote this work and will support the aims of the Haringey STEM Commission and STEM Strategy.

The five STEM hubs, secondary and junior schools will have a chance to showcase the STEM work that they are doing. It will be a great opportunity to network with colleagues from other schools and share good ideas.

There is also a Vex Robotics regional heat taking place at the school that day with several local schools competing.

If you would like to take part to showcase your STEM work or to come along to see colleagues’ good practice, please complete the attached form and send to David Hearn at Greig City: dhearn@greigcityacademy.co.uk

Check out the new Teach London web pages

The GLA has launched new Teach London webpages (external link) for London schools.

This content is designed to tell people about the great benefits of starting and developing a career as a teacher in London, including:

As the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says: “It is no wonder that thousands of graduates choose to stay in the capital to teach and to inspire the next generation of Londoners.”

These new webpages are part of the wider Teach London work programme, led by the Teaching Schools Council in London with support from the GLA and the wider school system.

Welbourne Primary builds city of the future

In December Welbourne Primary School was the only Haringey school to take part in the Teen Tech City STEM Challenge – to design and build an imaginary city of the future.

Using cardboard boxes of different sizes and shapes, children constructed a unique or new building that they thought their community needed.

Working with STEM ambassadors Jacqueline Owusu and Cyril Molony from Skanska AB, a Swedish multinational construction and development company, the Teen Tech City STEM challenge gave pupils an opportunity to collaborate, learn and build the things they imagine through creative play. The exercise let them explore their interests and passions, and learn critical thinking, resourcefulness, perseverance, and team work – all 21st century skills.

The Teen Tech City of Tomorrow Challenge offered Welbourne pupils the opportunity to apply their STEM knowledge to create their City of Tomorrow – where no ideas are too big and everything is smarter, kinder and safer than before. The activity highlighted career pathways in construction, engineering and technology, promoting good citizenship.

School travel update

Two Haringey schools were awarded Top School Awards by Transport for London for their brilliant work delivering life skills to their pupils.

Woodside Nursery, N22
Won top school award for Excellence in Cycling plus Silver School Travel Accreditation for their programme of encouraging children to learn to ride on two wheels through balanceablity training, culminating in a whole school Bikeathon challenge in their local park. They are proud that 99% move up to reception as independent cyclists on 2 wheels.

Gladesmore Secondary School
Won Top School Award for Excellence in Road Safety plus Gold travel plan accreditation.Gladesmore has taken part in the TfL run Youth Travel Ambassador scheme for 2 years, where a group of students creates a scheme to improve issues identified by the students. This has included road safety awareness activities and assemblies and poster competitions. This year after successfully pitching for £250 from TfL they created a Distraction Obstacle course.

Moving Up – Transition Competition Winner

Every year 6 child in Haringey was given a copy of Moving Up magazine in May. This gives information to help them to be safer traveling – especially when they move up to secondary school. Students aged 11 – 16 years are the most vulnerable age for being involved road traffic incidents. They also receive their new Zip Oyster Card and to help them understand that planning a journey is a good way to reduce risk of putting themselves in danger by getting lost, or late or confused, we offer a competition for them.

They have to work out how to travel around 5 points from Haringey to iconic London landmarks and then to their new secondary school.  This demonstrates an understanding of the public transport route planning tools available online

We received more than 300 entries this year and the standards were extremely high.  The top 6 entries for accuracy were from Earlham Primary School.  The outright winner was Julia who has now moved up to Woodside High.

On Friday 15 December Cllr Mitchell presented Julia with  her prize of a lovely new bike with safety equipment. Julia and her parents were very excited by her achievements. She was a well-deserved winner who was surprised and happy to be able to cycle again. Julia also said that her mum now uses the online planning tools for safer journeys too.

Joint Targeted Area Inspection

As you may have heard, Haringey is subject to a JTAI (Joint Targeted Area Inspection) which will take place between 4 – 8 December. The inspection will evaluate the effectiveness of multi-agency interventions for children between 7 and 15 years old who have experienced neglect.

By way of context:

  • A JTAI is a multi-agency inspection covering partnership arrangements between social care, health, police, probation and schools. As a result, JTAIs are also multi-inspectorate, involving Ofsted, HMIC, CQC and the Inspectorate of Probation.
  • There is no grading at the end of it, but there is a final report which will reflect the quality of individual services (though we expect this to cover schools overall, rather than name individual schools) and key partnership arrangements.
  • If you are interested in the inspection guidance and reports from other areas, they can be found here (external link)

Seven cases have been chosen for a ‘deep dive’ analysis – these were agreed with the inspectorates on Friday 1 December and the schools involved have all been notified and asked for relevant information.

For further information, please contact Eveleen Riordan or James Page, Joint Assistant Directors for Schools and Learning.
