Draw your favourite place in Haringey – competition for years 5 and 6

Next Monday 28 February sees the launch of an exciting drawing competition open to all children in years 5 and 6 across Haringey’s primary schools. Running until the beginning of May, the competition will ask children to draw a picture of their favourite place in Haringey – from the beautiful views of Haringey’s parks and green spaces to vibrant cultural hubs across the borough’s high streets and community spaces.

In addition to the winning design featuring on displays across the borough, we have an exciting set of prizes for the winner and two runners up to choose from – including tickets to ice skating at Alexandra Palace, a tour of Tottenham Hotspur’s Stadium, and various items of Tottenham Hotspur memorabilia!

The competition will form part of our work to develop a new borough plan for Haringey. This is an important central strategy document which will set out our key priorities for the borough for the next four years. It’s important to us that we involve the borough’s children and young people in this process.

We’ll be emailing all Haringey primary schools next Monday with more information about the competition and contact details of the relevant council team for any questions. We’d anticipate that schools should be able to run this competition as part of delivering their PHSE curricula – in particular, as part of curricula on living in the wider world and mental and physical wellbeing, by prompting children to think about their place within their communities and pride in their local area.

We’re really excited to see what children across the borough come up with, and thank you in advance for your support in getting Haringey’s children involved. We know we have some budding Picassos out there – so now is the chance for them to get their artist hats on and let their creative juices flow!

What matters most to Haringey’s young people? Encourage your secondary school pupils to take part in our Borough Plan pulse survey

Haringey Council is currently working on developing a new borough plan, which is our central strategy document that sets out our priorities for the borough from 2023 to 2027. As part of our work to develop the new borough plan, we are engaging with residents across all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life, to understand what life looks like for them now, how they want it to look in the future, and what we can do to achieve this.

We’re keen to involve Haringey’s children and young people in the process, recognising that they have a voice, and we need to hear it. This is why we’re launching a pulse survey next Monday 28 February with Haringey’s secondary school pupils. The survey will run until the beginning of May and will ask young people a set of questions focused on different aspects of their lives as young people who live, or go to school, in Haringey. The insights they provide will build upon the important feedback they provided in response to the Children Commissioner’s Big Ask survey last year, and the School Health Education Unit survey which has recently closed.

We’ll be emailing all Haringey secondary schools next Monday with information about the survey, as well as a link to complete the survey online. We would really appreciate it if schools could encourage their pupils to take part as much as possible – it’s a brilliant way for them to get involved in the council’s work and will pave the way for further participation for those who are interested in getting involved in the process again later this year.

Uncollected spare Adrenaline auto injector pens for Haringey schools

A number of schools in Haringey have still not collected their allocation of Adrenaline auto injector (AAI) pens – please see this letter:

AAI letter to schools via PH 022022

If schools do not want to take up this offer can they please responds as soon as possible (to margaretpowell@nhs.net ) so that we can take them off our outstanding list.

————-

In line with the guidance on the use of adrenaline pens in schools, we have supplied Haringey Council maintained schools with “spare” adrenaline pens for the treatment of children who may have an allergic attack at school.

These spare pens are only to be used:

  • for pupils who hold both medical authorisation and parental consent for administration
  • if the pupil’s own prescribed pen is not immediately available (e.g. because it is broken, out-of- date, misfired or wrongly administered).

Children at risk of anaphylaxis should continue to get their prescribed AAIs supply from their GP for use in an emergency, as normal. GPs should not be asked to prescribe spare/back-up AAIs to be held by the schools. The schools have been provided with specialist anaphylaxis training on how to administer all the three brands of Adrenaline auto injector pens available in the UK.

If you would like you child to have access to a spare adrenalin pen in an emergency, should there be a problem with the pens that they carry around with them, then do provide written consent to the staff member who is responsible for their care at school.
