COVID-19 vaccines for 12–15-year-olds

More than 1.9 million doses of the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine have now been given to young people aged 12 to 15, protecting them and their families. The virus has not gone away. Infection rates are high. Young people are missing out on their education, work and their lives because of COVID-19-related illness. And we are still learning about the long-term damage the virus can do.

The NHS has now made it easier for young people to get the vaccine.

Vaccination UK is visiting all secondary schools in the borough to administer second doses of the vaccine and first doses to those who missed out during autumn term.

Alternatively, you can book a first or second appointment for your child at vaccination clinics in Haringey, by calling 119 or visiting www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination.

Children aged 12 to 15 who are at high risk from COVID-19 infection, or live with someone who is immunosuppressed, can now get a booster dose, 91 days (3 months) after their second dose. Visit www.nhs.uk/covid-booster for more information.

Healthy Start vouchers to go digital

Healthy Start paper vouchers will soon be replaced with a prepaid card as the NHS introduces a new digital service. The NHS Healthy Start scheme helps those who are pregnant or have at least one child under four years of age, and are claiming a qualifying benefit, to buy healthy food and milk and access free vitamins. The new prepaid cards will be topped up automatically every four weeks and can be used in any retailer that accepts Mastercard ® and sells the eligible Healthy Start food and milk items.

Families in Haringey that are already in receipt of Healthy Start vouchers will need to reapply online to continue receiving the benefit.

Existing beneficiaries and new applicants can find out more and join the new digital scheme, by visiting www.healthystart.nhs.uk or by calling the NHS Healthy Start helpline on 0300 330 701.

Haringey Council can also give an additional one-off £90 payment to families claiming Healthy Start this winter. For more information, please visit the Haringey Council website.

Take part in Biblio-buzz 2022: children’s book award

We’d like to encourage children aged 9 to 12 from across Haringey to take part in Biblio-buzz 2022: the Alexandra Palace Children’s book award, which aims to inspire a love of reading and writing through a series of literary challenges, inspired by six professional authors.

Biblio-buzz is run by Haringey Library Services and  Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust. Participants are challenged to read six shortlisted texts, before voting for their favourite. Biblio-buzz will culminate at an award ceremony on Friday 25 March at the Alexandra Palace Theatre, whose stage has been graced in recent times by renowned authors like JK Rowling, Phillip Pullman, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Rosen and many more.

There is an exciting programme of activities in Wood Green Library, including opportunities to hear readings from one of the shortlisted authors, Anna Goodall, and work with artist Alice Haskell. Over the next three months, Haringey libraries will also be running a variety of workshops, as well as opportunities to meet with the shortlisted authors. Enquire at your local library about how to get involved.

The award was founded by a team of dedicated school librarians who have built a passionate following amongst primary schools who use Biblio-buzz as a cherished part of their annual enrichment programme. The support of Alexandra Palace and partnership with Haringey Library Services has helped to grow the scheme and give greater access to the reading challenge – ensuring every child in Haringey aged nine to 12 can get involved.
The Biblio-buzz 2022 shortlisted novels are:

•    The Soup Movement by Ben Davis
•    When Life Gives You Mangoes by Kereen Getten
•    Maggie Blue and the Dark World by Anna Goodall
•    How I Saved the World in a Week by Polly Ho-Yen
•    The Beast and the Bethany by Jack Meggitt-Phillips
•    Dark Peak by Marcus Sedgwick

Contact the Learning team at Alexandra Palace on learning@alexandrapalace.com to find out how your school can take part in Bibio-Buzz 2022.
