Champions for Children Appeal – campaign to help children affected by the pandemic

Haringey Giving has teamed up with the Childhood Trust for a new fundraising campaign to help support Haringey’s children and young people who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Champions for Children Appeal, which will run from midday today (Tuesday 8 June 2021) to the same day and time next week (12 noon on Tuesday 15 June 2021), will be match-funded by the Childhood Trust for monies raised up to a total of £10,000.

Haringey Giving will use the funds raised to provide small grants of around £1,000 to charities and community groups who are supporting children and young people through the recovery phase of the pandemic.

Any funds raised above the £10,000 target will be distributed as small grants to projects supporting children and young people through the ‘Together We Can’ programme.

For further information about the Champions for Children Appeal visit the Haringey Giving website.

Tottenham Sports Development Club – Cambridge visit

Seventeen students from Tottenham visited the University of Cambridge as part of Estudiantes London, a sport-for-development club that uses the power of sport to drive academic excellence.

The club draws the lion’s share of its participants from Haringey 6 Form College but is open to anyone aged 13-19 who is committed to their studies. To be able to participate in UEFA-coached football training sessions as well as show case matches, students must show an excellent attitude to their education.

Matches such as the one against Cambridge serve two purposes. Firstly, their prestige helps drive the project forward and gives students an exhibition match to strive for. Secondly, and more importantly, they are there to remind students that their talent and excellence can see them gain outstanding opportunities if they show the necessary dedication.

This year, the Estudiantes team, who compete in the LNFS England league, have travelled across the UK to take on teams from varying levels of the football and futsal pyramid, including a tour and match at the leading sports university in the world at Loughborough. The students were reunited with their formers team-mates Fabio Teixeira and Tenzin Dhongak. Both are graduates from Estudiantes and Haringey 6th Form College, who have since joined the International Futsal Academy to complete their degree at Loughborough.

Haringey Sixth Form student athlete Owen Locke is a great example of the work of Estudiantes. In the last year, Owen has gained his FA Level 1 in football and futsal coaching qualification, refereeing licence, and is currently taking his FA Level in Talent ID. As one of the top young futsal goalkeepers in England, he has recently joined Genesis Futsal Club and been a stand out performer in the Futsal Premier League.

Despite the complications of COVID-19, students have participated in over 200 training sessions across volleyball, futsal and football since September 2020, with regular trips and showcase matches organised to provide outstanding opportunities for the participants.

Russ Lawrance, CEO Haringey Sixth Form Educational Trust said:

“The work that Estudiantes have done at Haringey Sixth Form College has really boosted participation and opportunities for our students; it has strengthened relationships and helped students cope in challenging times. The students now feel more comfortable communicating with their teammates, staff and other students. The added bonus is also the high quality experience – it’s not only inspirational, it raises expectations, this is the ‘can do/will do’ attitude which is so important. I am delighted with the quality of coaching from Estudiantes London.”

Anyone interested in joining the club should contact:  07930 395314 or info@estudiantes.co.uk

Moving Up and Mission Transition for Year 6 students

Arriving at your school this week: a copy of Moving Up and Mission Transition for every year 6 pupil, plus a teacher’s lesson pack. The teacher’s pack include: letter, lesson plan, 10 x maps of Haringey, 3 activity sheets.

As you may remember, we supply you with these resources to help you with the final term with your year 6 pupils before they are off to secondary school and gain more independence.

This is an important year for them, as they may never have had so much freedom and peer pressure and the last thing they want is to become a statistic. Incidentally, we have now included some information about Operation Fearless, we know that a barrier to independence can come from fears of this nature.

These resources are free of charge, but full of valuable information. Please try to support your Year 6 teachers, making sure they receive them and hopefully dedicate a day to look at them and follow the lesson plan too.

The Mission Transition competition is only open to students in Haringey – one of them really can win a bike of their choice!  If they can complete the booklet and send it back to us in class packs, with your school name on the envelope, we will check each entry and choose one overall winner. The bike will be chosen from Finsbury Cycles and we will arrange to present it to the winning pupil in school.

Please send entries to: Smarter Travel Team, 1st Floor, Cumberland House, 40 Cumberland Road, Wood Green N22 7SG.

The closing date is Wednesday 30 June (please contact Wendy Thorogood if this date is not convenient).

Using these resources also fulfils a fair few of those essential activities on your TfL STARS travel plan too.

Air pollution lessons and resources

The Cleaner Air Sooner programme (www.cleanerairsooner.org) is funded by the Clean Air Fund, and we provide free resources for schools so they can deliver simple clean air projects to help children breathe cleaner air.

There are 6 toolkit projects, and we are encouraging schools to get involved with either the Raising Awareness project, or the clean air route mapping project, for Clean Air Day this year.

So far we have had around 50 schools sign up to the programme, and we are now working with local authorities across London to promote the programme activities to school for Clean Air Day.

I’ve attached the newsletter / email copy we have produced for local authorities to use to promote the activities to schools in their borough.

And here is a summary of the two possible project activities for local authorities.

Clean Air Route Mapping project launch

In advance:

  • Encourage as many schools as possible to produce clean air route maps for their schools, with a particular focus on those on or near main roads.
  • Schools can download our mapping project toolkit and prepare for the day’s activities.

On the day:

  • Lesson: One class (suggest year 5 or 6, or the eco council) would have a lesson on air quality and schools (either using our video-recorded lesson, or using our PowerPoint presentation with reader notes if they’d like to deliver it themselves).
  • Look at maps: The class will look at a pollution map of their area and identify which are the most polluted / least polluted roads.
  • Produce map elements: In the second part of the class, they would produce the elements of the map – drawings of their favourite places in the area, background map of the roads (colouring the polluted roads red), logo or name for the map.
  • Share images: The school shares images / videos of the activity on social media

After the class:

  • Either a teacher or a parent with graphic design skills puts together the elements of the map.
  • The map can be printed and all children at the school receive a copy, and it could also be printed as a large banner to put up outside the school.
  • Raising Awareness and posters / letter writing

Schools commit to raising awareness about pollution at their school on Clean Air Day, and can use the resources in our ‘Raising Awareness’ toolkit:

In advance:

  • Schools download the toolkit and can send out the letter to parents to let them know the activity is happening.
  • Schools can arrange for a ‘Clean Air in the Making’ banner to be sent to them (see below), and take photos of some pupils by the banner. We can provide the council with the file for printing (we suggest the banner is sent a day or two before, so you have some visuals for use on Clean Air Day itself).

On the day:

  • Lesson: One class (suggest year 5 or 6, or the eco council) would deliver a lesson on air quality and schools (either using our video-recorded lesson, or using our PowerPoint presentation with reader notes if they’d like to deliver it themselves).
  • Activity: In the second half of the lesson, pupils can create a poster or video message about air quality, for use on the school’s social media/ school newsletter, and share with the local authority. Or they could write a letter to a local politician about clean air and schools.

The learning outcomes for these projects are that pupils will understand

  • What pollution is and what creates it.
  • What can happen to us if we breathe in too much pollution.
  • Why it’s important for schools to have clean air.
  • What you can do about it.

Haringey’s #ProudToProtect COVID-19 vaccine campaign

We’ve launched an exciting social media campaign to celebrate everyone across Haringey who’s getting vaccinated to help protect themselves and their loved ones from #COVID-19.

We want to encourage everyone who lives and works in the borough to share that they’ve had their vaccine and show everyone how proud they are.

When it’s time to get the COVID-19 vaccine, people can get involved by:

  • Sharing a picture or video of themselves getting the jab, with their vaccine card, or wearing their vaccination sticker
  • Telling us why they’re proud to be vaccinated (e.g. to protect their loved ones, to help get the world back to normal etc.)
  • Tagging @HaringeyCouncil on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram
  • And including the hashtag #ProudToProtect

Keep a look out, we’ll be re-sharing some of these posts on our social media channels.

Urgent – No Barriers UEFA Euros 2021 opportunity for primary schools!

Dear Teachers

We are getting in touch offering your school a once in a lifetime opportunity as part of No Barriers, a project that uses the power of football to champion inclusion in your school.

We are looking for one student from your school, aged 6-10, to represent their borough at the UEFA EUROs and walk onto the pitch at Wembley Stadium with a team playing in UEFA EUROs. Students from each London borough will be selected to attend the games, which makes this an exclusive and brilliant opportunity for your school.

In order to qualify, your school must sign up through the No Barriers webform which can be found here: https://www.big-ideas.org/nobarriers/ by Thursday 20th May.

As part of that form you must submit a ‘No Barriers Commitment’ from your school, committing to breaking down barriers to inclusion through sport. Your ‘No Barriers Commitment’ could include:

  • Why is it important for everyone in your school to overcome the barriers they face?
  • What can football do to inspire your pupils to overcome barriers?
  • What can the UEFA EUROs do to inspire your pupils to overcome barriers?
  • How do pupils in your school overcome the barriers they face?
  • Tell us how your school can overcome barriers to give everyone the best shot at goal?

Places are limited and first come, first serve, so get in touch ASAP to ensure your place.

T&Cs

Schools will be selected with the aim that every borough of London is represented. When more than one school applies from a borough, schools that submit the most inspiring messages with a commitment to take part in the project will be selected. Everyone will be kept on a waiting list for further opportunities.

If your school has been selected for this opportunity, Big Ideas will contact you to confirm the details of your nominated student and to obtain consent from a parent or guardian.

All schools who register will be invited to take part in the No Barriers programme.

Feel free to contact Hollie with any questions on 07467 946897.

Best wishes,

The No Barriers team
