Funding for community well-being projects offered by ChangeX

I work at a not-for-profit organisation called ChangeX and we recently launched a community fund for sustainability and community well-being projects in Greater London, supported by Microsoft.

There are a number of projects specifically relevant for schools, designed to develop digital skills and improve the school environment. These projects have already been successful across the UK, US and Europe. There is now funding available for schools across Greater London to get these projects started!

You can find all the information about how to apply to the fund and more information about the projects that you can start here (below are a small selection of these).

Grow at School is a school-based food literacy programme that inspires and supports the whole school community to learn the practical skills and transferable knowledge around food growing food that will, through the simple but joyful experience of harvesting and eating homegrown (school grown!) food, create a school culture of food empathy.

Girls Who Code is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does. GWC clubs are free extracurricular programmes for Year 4-13 girls that teach participants about Computer Science in a fun and safe environment!

Apps for Good is dedicated to inspiring the digital entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Delivered by teachers, the courses (Machine Learning, IoT & App Development) pass on the vital digital and employability skills students will need in the 21st century. They improve the understanding of and interest in pursuing a tech career in young people aged 10-18.

Through this UK Community Challenge, you can get funding of between £500 – £3000 to cover the cost of the projects and you will also receive free support to implement the programmes.

You can learn more and read the guidelines & criteria here

If you have any questions about this, please let me know!

Award win for Haringey students’ knife crime campaign

We are pleased to announce that the film “I’m Out” was winner of the Best Public Sector Content Campaign of the Year at the UK Content Awards 2020. This short film was a part of a campaign with Haringey Council, Casual Films and the Met Police. “I’m Out” is a bold series of three short films on the impact knife crime has on the people involved and those close to them. This film was created and made by Haringey Sixth Form College Media Students, for young people. “I’m Out” addresses the issue of youth violence which often makes headlines across London.

With no major acting experience or film-making credits to their name, students from Haringey Sixth Form College showed off their talents after they worked alongside a professional video company to devise their very own three-film series.

The I’m Out films show the devastating consequences of getting caught up in violence, by telling the stories of young characters involved and the impact on their families.

The students were determined to spread the message that there is a way out for anyone who is at risk of getting caught up in violence.

The news coverage for this film and its powerful message has been incredible with several news channels and newspapers interviewing  Media students and was premiered at Cineword Cinemas in Wood Green in February.

The films were up against some of the biggest brand names in the country and were also highly commended for Outreach Campaign of the year.

One of the stars of the film, Leyla Cin, who is now working at Haringey Councill and in a legal firm, said:

“The ‘I’m out’ project was an incredible opportunity and one that allowed me and the team I was a part of to speak our minds freely about such an ongoing problem. We got the opportunity to work with a professional production company, appear on the news and allowed us to embrace our dreams of trying to inspire and spread a positive message and shine a light on dark and upcoming times. The opportunities were endless and I’m thankful to have been a part of it.”

Another star of the film Daria Iosif, who is now studying International Marketing at university, added:

“I am so proud of H6!  This award is well deserved without doubt! As a former student at Haringey Sixth Form College I am proud to say that this award reflects our college’s goal which is to make a positive impact and to push its students to achieve their true potential. With the help of the talented students of H6, Casual Film Production and Haringey Council we were able to portray the cruel reality of what is happening all over the world. This project is so beneficial and eye-opening for people of all ages to understand how these acts can be prevented. Personally, this was such a great experience, because not only it was educative, but also great to get an insight into the world of cinema.”

You can watch the films, behind the scenes footage, and interviews with the cast and crew at www.imout.org.uk

Free Idling Action air quality workshops for primary schools

As a partner borough of the Pan-London Anti-Idling programme Idling Action London, Haringey Council is inviting its primary schools to host a FREE air quality workshop for its year 4, 5, or 6 classes, followed by an opportunity to take part in one (or more) ‘Idling Challenges’.

We want to teach pupils about the importance of air quality and arm them with the information they need to minimise their own exposure to air pollution, as well as engage the school community to act and persuade drivers to switch off their engines when parked outside schools.

The workshop builds on existing eco and active travel initiatives and can be delivered either by the Idling Action project officer in school or virtually, or independently by the teacher utilising our video workshop and lesson plan.  The workshop concludes with the students taking part in one (or more) Idling Challenges including our Anti-Idling Banner Challenge or No Idling Pledge Challenge.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought respiratory health to the fore, and although studies have suggested that prior exposure to air pollution can worsen the symptoms of coronavirus, we have also seen the benefits for local air quality when there are fewer cars on the road. London Idling Action’s work is now more important than ever, as we strive to work together with schools to raise awareness of air quality and to reduce avoidable air pollution from vehicle engine idling.

If you are interested in booking a visit, or utilising our free resources yourselves, please get in touch with us.

The latest news from Smarter Travel

The Smarter Travel team would like to support schools in delivering various programmes during  this difficult period. We have resources and information online to continue our work. We would appreciate if you could work on the Stars programme and complete the Hand up surveys.

The Brake Road safety week runs from 16- 22 November and you can apply for resources online.

To help schools to be more active, we have a lot of information on walking, cycling and scooting. For further support please do not hesitate to email us on Smarter.Travel@haringey.gov.uk.

Walk, cycle or scoot your school journey

We want to make sure that those who can are walking, cycling or scooting to school. We have seen an increase in the numbers of people driving short journeys since the Covid-19 pandemic, causing congestion, pollution and road safety issues. It is often much quicker to walk your 10 minute journey to school than to drive and end up waiting in traffic around the school gates. Please promote this to your parents/carers and ask them to travel actively.

TfL’s school bus services

As you may know, TfL have been running additional buses on some of their routes for school-only services. These school bus services were due to finish at October half term, but are now being extended until the end of autumn term. Please let your students know that they should continue to travel on the school services if they have been since September.
