Reception/Junior admissions 2021 – reminder

Primary schools only

The application deadline is 15 January 2021 and National offer day will be 16 April 2021.

Please note we will NOT be delivering printed booklets to schools this year. Parents will be able to view our digital viewbook online and asked to apply via e-admissions website (external link). The Secondary admissions viewbook also includes information on the secondary school open events which are also available on our website (external link).

Please can you remind parents/carers with children in your nursery (where applicable) to apply on time and also to alert families with children already on roll who have younger siblings. We have a small number of families every year who forget to make a reception application for their second or subsequent child or a Junior transfer application for their infant school child. With your help and support in publicising these deadlines and the imperative of making an on-time application we can minimise the number of families who don’t secure a school place at one of their preferred schools.

Preferences

We will let you know how many reception preferences you have received (including from those applicants resident outside Haringey) on 11 February 2021. If you would like to know how many applicants have applied online (not on paper) you can find this out now by logging on to the online admissions system (external link)

On 11 February 2021, we will also send you a list to verify sibling applications (community and voluntary controlled schools only) or send you a full list of applicants to rank in the order of your admissions criteria (academies and voluntary aided schools only). It is very important that you return these lists by no later than 25 February 2021 to ensure that we are able to meet our PAN London deadlines.

Offers

We will send you a final offer list before 16 April 2021. After offer day we will continue to send you updated lists as places are declined and new offers are made.

For any queries on any of the above, please contact Lynne Tighe, Lynne.Tighe@haringey.gov.uk (Reception) or Imogen Rush, Imogen.Rush@haringey.gov.uk (Junior).

Making history every day – Black History Haringey 365

Each year in Haringey we mark Black History Month with pride – and this year, we are marking it by launching our brand new Black History Haringey 365 project.

This year – as well as a packed list of COVID-secure activities – we have created a permanent online hub where visitors can discover more about Haringey’s rich, black cultural heritage that can be shared throughout the year and not just for one month.

On our Black History Haringey 365 webpages you will find lots to explore: events, crafts, learning, quizzes, 600 years of Haringey’s black history and lots more.

Check it out at www.haringey.gov.uk/bhh365

The site also has a wealth of online black history resources for schools which can be found at www.haringey.gov.uk/culture/black-history/learning/schools. For more details about availability of resources, please contact the education team at Bruce Castle Museum. One of this year’s key events is an online talk about Oliver Tambo on Thursday 29 October. Full details are available on the events page.

There will also be exhibitions, story time and sing-along for pre-school children, online family entertainment and online workshops.

You can see the full programme of events available here.

Dyslexia Awareness Week 5-11 October – packs for schools

This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week – aimed at raising awareness and understanding of dyslexia: what it means, what it is and what can be done to support people who have dyslexia.

What is dyslexia?

Far from rare, dyslexia is a common difficulty people face when reading text or words. Because intelligence is not impacted, it is not described as a learning disability but a difficulty.

The main disruption dyslexia causes is phonological awareness. In other words, this is our ability to understand sounds and letters. The extent of a person’s dyslexia can greatly vary. For some people, their dyslexia may just slow them down when reading and writing, but for others, dyslexia can be as serious as causing visual interruptions when reading, with words and letters appearing blurred.

Raise awareness with Dyslexia Week resources

The British Dyslexia Association has created lots of useful resources to help schools and colleges to raise awareness and shine a light on what #DyslexiaCreates:

Online panto – Covidella and the Masked Ball

Pantoland is bereft – the pandemic has taken the wind out of the sails of even the most resilient fairy. Over at Panto HQ the phones just won’t stop ringing. Costumes are no longer covid compliant, the props are all problematic (not enough anti-bac), even the modes of transport are proving difficult. That is until they receive a letter from Covidella asking for some help.

Watch a traditional pantomime that will get you shouting at the screen and singing along at school. The panto is performed by the MTA theatre school based at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.

School licences are now available. One fee offers the licence for a week to play in all your classroom bubbles. You can even sell on the licence via your school’s PTA in order to raise some much needed additional funds for your school

Contact info@theMTA.co.uk for more details.

Discounted licences are available for Haringey schools.

Streaming week will be 14 -18 December 2020

Clean Air Day – 8 October

Clean air day coincides nicely with international walking month this year! Global Action Plan organise the day and have a packed virtual agenda that you can access with your students! Please have a look on their website for activity ideas and their free resources. There is also a virtual assembly taking place at 10.15am! If you attend, you could take a photo and upload this to STARS.

TfL STARS School Travel Planning

We are still urgently waiting for your Hands Up figures.  Every school that has requested support from us, or received it, we need your active travel and car usage figures to be able to support you. We have great difficulty assisting schools when we have no idea what your issues are or how many people are coming to school by car.

The STARS Hands Up Survey is easy: you send your colleagues the link, they count how each child came to school in their class – it goes directly into the surveys. They then do same for the adults in the class. Your Travel Champion only has to collect information from non-teaching staff and enter this too.

The Golden Lock

We have boxes of prizes waiting for schools who want to increase the number of pupils cycling/scooting to school. These are generous and make a huge impact. We have filled them with 16 different cycle/scooter related prizes.

To qualify, you must complete your hands up survey on STARS, email us and we will deliver one of our prize filled boxes. Please contact Smarter.Travel@haringey.gov.uk if you are unsure on how to get started.

Cycle Training

Our cycle training company Cycle Confident has funds from us now. Please liaise with them to arrange training, we are very keen to support you with cycle training once again.

Additionally, we would like you to take up the offer of free online cycle training from TfL. This training can be accessed for free by anyone, and all participants who complete the training receive a voucher for free Santander cycle hire for 24 hours. Please promote this to all your staff and parents, as space on the adult cycle skills sessions at the moment are limited. The cycle training can be accessed at: https://cycle-skillsonline.tfl.gov.uk/
