  • Please can schools ensure that they contact Firoz Mazumder on 020 8702 5410 before collecting the spare AAI pens.
  • This is to make sure that they have a confirmed time slot before attending the pharmacy department at St Ann’s Hospital.

  • Each school will be given a time slot to collect their supply of AAI pens.
  • The AAI pens will be given to schools providing they submit a completed AAI Spare Pens Form 2020 to Firoz.

 Please note

The Haringey Medicines Management team is only in a position to supply enough free AAI pens to Haringey local authority primary and secondary schools only. They are unable to provide free spare AAI pens to Haringey independent or private schools and early years’ settings, including nurseries. Spare AAI pens can be purchased without a prescription in line with the Department of Health guidance on the AAI pens in schools link here

If the school has to purchase AAI pens, they must do so from a local community pharmacy. They can do this using an order on appropriately headed paper (if possible) which must be signed by the principal or head teacher at the school concerned, stating the following:

  • the name of the school
  • the purpose or why the AAIs is/are required
  • the total number of AAIs required.

A suggested letter template can be found here www.sparepensinschools.uk or in the annex of the Department of Health guidance on the AAI pens in schools link here

Please check the expiry date when you are buying the devices and ensure that you do not buy one with a few months to its expiry date. All the brands of AAI pens have a maximum of 18 months from date of manufacture.

Google has set up a virtual library for children with dozens of books addressing racism, inequality and culture in Black, Asian and Indigenous communities. In the document, clicking on each of the books will bring up a video and take you to someone reading or the pages being turned for you whilst you read yourself.

It’s broken down into areas such as: Black Heroes, Black Live Matters, Separate is Never Equal, Civil Rights Leaders, Indigenous Stories and many more.

To access and start sharing with children – go to the Google Classroom Library.

The latest news from Smarter Travel

Social distancing resources

We have completed deliveries to all local authority schools. This comprised of banners and stencils and spray paint to paint markers on the pavement to encourage social distancing. We hope that this small gesture has been a help to all of our schools and nurseries.

The paint is available on Amazon, but it must be the same formulation. We believe it lasts about 4 to 6 weeks, so come September you will probably need to repaint these.

Win a scooter for tweeting

As a little extra incentive, please can you take a picture of your banner on your fences and the stencil shapes on the pavement. We would really appreciate it if you could Tweet this or add to your Facebook with the tag: @haringeycouncil

We will be choosing one school at random from all of the tweets/messages and we will award a lovely new Micro Speed + scooter worth about £130. Obviously, this could also be a great raffle prize to raise money for your school to buy more or an incentive to keep someone motivated. Plus, we will send four schools a selection of travel related goodies, for prizes and incentives.

Email or tweet to be in the draw! We will announce the winner on Friday 3 July and prizes will be delivered the following week.

 Cycling

There is no news about cycle training at this time, sorry – Covid19 has put a stop to this too. Please, while there are so few children in school, encourage them all to bring their bikes and scooters in and encourage them to practice at break and lunch times. Please make disinfectant spray available to cyclists to help eliminate any virus on their bikes when they park them at school.

Support for families and staff with cycling

There are some really good websites that can help parents with teaching their children to ride a bike, such as this one: https://activeforlife.com/how-to-teach-your-child-ride-bike/

If you would like some of our cycle training books, please email: smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk

Also please send out the information about Peddle My Wheels (PMW), Try Before You Bike

We work with PMW to offer our residents options to own their own bikes and get bikes for their children on a pay monthly scheme.

Finally, we are not able to offer bike maintenance at the moment, but maybe this booklet could help your parents and staff Bike Maintenance Made Ridiculously Easy or Halfords are offering a free bike checks (chargeable service).

Staff paid by Haringey Council are eligible to get a bike through the enhanced (up to £2,000) Cycle to work scheme too.

Road safety and transition

We are concerned that this crisis has meant our year 6 pupils have received little transition information yet, so two exciting bits of news for you are:

Our Moving Up book has been updated and TfL have approved it, as well as the new and exciting Mission Transition competition. We will be delivering these to your schools as soon as they arrive. The competition entry date is by the end of September, but we hope you can work on them in school this term. Kindly confirm how many year 6 students you have with you, so we bring the right numbers.

The London Transport team has created a fabulous online version of the Safety and Citizenship road show which they normally deliver to year 6 students. This is available to students on the TfL STARS website. Please show the children how they can access this. Either search TfL STARS or use this link: https://stars.tfl.gov.uk/

 Additional supporting activities

If you are looking for a great activity to complete with your year 6 pupils the Distraction activity on STARS is simple but very effective. There are many other activities suitable for your students including journey planning.

You will also find excellent resources on line via Think Education. These offer amazing support for all ages with downloadable exercises to cover the essential road safety messages.

Look up – TfL STARS and choose: Explore, then, Activities, these are free to use and download, contact us for more support or resources to help deliver these, such as borough maps, maybe some prizes.

As we approach the summer holidays, we hope that you are able to deliver some reminders to your pupils.

The Green Cross Code is the key to every successful road crossing, for all ages. The more we get this message in, the more it sticks.

Maybe the children can choose their own activity, it is a very safe website to use and any activities that you carry out will add to your School Travel Plan accreditation for TfL STARS too, just send evidence to your school travel plan teacher or back to us to upload. Smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk subject: STARS Evidence.

School Streets

We will be contacting schools that have highlighted issues to let you know what the engineers have designed to make the improvements at your school. There will need to be further consultation with you and your neighbouring residents, as well as the pupils. These major changes will affect the whole community, we feel, for the better as they aim to make the area safer and more attractive for families.

This will be a long term change and we cannot deliver all immediately, but we are committed to change. Our team will be contacting the first round of schools soon.

Central Government has allocated funds to adoption agencies including Adopt London (which includes Haringey), to support the families (adopters and in this case special guardianship families) who are struggling with their children during lockdown and the aftermath.

Keeping children safe – Haringey’s Early Help Panel

Haringey’s Early Help Service is a key part of delivering services to children and families. Their work is vital and has not stopped due to Covid19. Just like any other essential service, our staff have continued to work and deliver and ensure some of Haringey’s most vulnerable children are safe and secure and have the opportunity to achieve to their full potential.

Early Help Panel

Haringey’s Multi-Agency Early Help Panel helps identify the support needs for those families who require extra help to prevent problems developing. A multi-agency partnership (18 members) made up of Haringey Council staff as well as those from the Police, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and other services work together to identify and support vulnerable children and families. Any agency working with a child who they believe needs early intervention and support to stop further problems developing can refer to the Early Help Panel. The panel ensures resources can be deployed pro-actively to address issues as soon as concerns arise. Issues that the panel may help to support a child and their family with are:

  • Early problems regarding criminal and/or sexual  exploitation.
  • Behavioural problems
  • Financial difficulties/problems e.g. not being able to buy essentials such as food and fuel.
  • Issues of domestic abuse
  • Housing problems/issues e.g. rent arrears
  • Mental Health problems
  • Alcohol and substance misuse problems

What else does the panel do?

The panel aims to assess the issues and risks and respond to need quickly in order to minimise potential harm. When issues are identified, a lead agency/professional will be tasked by the panel to ensure that the family receive support and advice asap. Obviously there are criteria to be met and thresholds as to what issues and levels of risk it is appropriate for the Panel to engage with. This panel is aimed at low to medium risk work with higher level risk, e.g. Safeguarding concerns, going for formal children’s services assessment.

The panel deals with many sensitive and traumatising issues faced by children and their families and at the heart of the panels work is the support offered by the Early Help Service. Our staff, even during the Covid 19 crisis, continue to deliver and go the extra mile to help families. Despite staff being dispersed and working from home staff have continued to work as a team and work with these children and families ensuring people remain safe and supported e.g. through the provision of food parcels to those who are struggling.

Children’s Art Week 29 June – 19 July 2020

Children’s Art Week runs from 29 June – 19 July 2020 and is a UK-wide programme run by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education.

This annual campaign encourages venues and schools to participate in activities that capture children’s imaginations and encourages creativity. Children’s Art Week creates an opportunity for children to engage with the arts – and your school can take part.

There are countless benefits for children and young people in working with artworks, artists and galleries, demonstrated through ground-breaking programmes run by Engage as well as many other organisations. Many schools use Children’s Art Week as a way to bring more arts activity into the school curriculum, whether by working with an artist, curating an exhibition of children’s work, or dedicating that week to a programme of arts activity.

In 2020, Children’s Art Week will take place online, at home and in schools across three weeks in June and July. Each week will focus on a special theme.

2020 themes

Week 1 (from 29 June): The Natural World
Week 2 (from 6 July): Connecting across generations
Week 3 (from 13 July): Literacy and creative writing

This year the London Youth Games are taking place virtually! The LYG Virtual Games give children and young people the chance to represent their boroughs in a series of sport-related challenges that can be done at home, at school or while out for daily exercise.

Haringey currently stands in 8th place as we enter the final week of the games.

The LYG Virtual Games are open to all children and young people from London, who will compete across the 12 different challenges to earn points for their boroughs. All the challenges will come with suggested adaptations for space, equipment and ability to ensure they are as inclusive as possible.
