On Friday 20 September the newly refurbished lecture theatre of Haringey Sixth Form College was packed with over 160 bright-eyed primary school students ready to ‘enrol’ into Tottenham University’s (TU) 2019/20 cohort. Joining them were their teachers and a few parents/carers.
Year 4 and 5 pupils from the following schools were there:
- St Paul’s & All Hallows’
- Devonshire Hill
- St Francis’ de Sales
- Lancastrian
- Brook House
- Lea Valley
- Risley Avenue
The event opened with an energetic welcome from Principal & CEO of Haringey Sixth Form College, Russ Lawrance and was followed with speech by Dalwardin Babu OBE, Community Development Officer/Tottenham University Coordinator and James Lane, Headteacher at St Francis’ de Sale Primary School.
James ended his speech with the following inspirational message:
“There’s no reason you can’t be a Prime Minister in the future. So, my challenge to you, as primary school students in Tottenham, is to remember one thing – Learn more! Do more! Be more! Write that in your new journals and always reflect on it!”
Graduates from previous Tottenham University cohorts were given the chance to share their experiences on the project, where one student mentioned:
“My time at Tottenham University last year was great because I went to Oxford University and I also went to the Houses of Parliament. Because of these trips, I know that one day I can also go to university and I can also work at The Houses of Parliament.”
Guest of Honour, Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheila Peacock gave an encouraging speech which reflected on her time as a young student who grew up in Tottenham and also studied there too, at the site which was once known as Middlesex University (Tottenham Campus), now Haringey Sixth Form College. She then individually handed the new TU journals (which were sponsored by Haringey Sixth Form College) to every student and shook their hands to welcome them on board.
In the words of James Lane, Headteacher of St Francis’ de Sales Primary School “Learn more! Do more! Be more!” And this is exactly the message that the TU project and its participants have portrayed over the last three years, and will continue to do so.

Preparations are currently under way for October’s Black History Month celebrations. This year’s programme promises an impressive line-up, with a variety of activities and events designed to celebrate the achievements and contributions of black people in the UK. As part of the plans, Haringey Council is calling on support from schools to help promote the event. We are asking for schools to help us record short video clips of their pupils saying why Black History Month is important and what it means to them. This is an exciting project – we want to get children and young people excited about Black History Month!

Wood Green arts charity Collage Arts is giving a voice to all young people in Haringey through its youth arts participation programme
Collage Voices offers young people the opportunity to participate in weekly performing and media arts programme where they create work based on ideas and concerns that interest them. It is open to everyone aged 8-18, regardless of previous experience. From September 2019 weekly sessions will cost just £2 a week.
Artistic Director, Steve Medlin says: “Over the past year we have worked with young people and supported them to create songs, poetry and theatre about issues they care about through their different individual perspectives. Initially we charged £10 a week and trialled an approach of offering reduced priced to people who needed it. However, we have now decided to remove one of the main barriers to participation by considerably reducing the price. We will now be charging £2 a week for a 90 minute session.”
“One of the most exciting things about our pilot is that around 50 young people come to us regularly from across the borough. Some are serious about a future in the arts, whilst others want a creative outlet or the opportunity to increase their confidence. We are seeing friendship develop between young people who would never have met without the Collage Voices programme”.
Collage Arts is seeking to address the constant barrage of negative youth stereotyping in the media by getting children and teenagers involved in changing the story that others have built for them. Earlier this year they staged an event, Beating the Bounds, which reimagined Wood Green through the eyes of young people. The show moved around Wood Green celebrating what was important to the participants, whilst highlighting some of the challenges they face day today. This was achieved through original songs and raps, dance, film and drama. The young people even made the set and props in a half-term workshop.
Collage Arts has access to professional facilities including a drama studio, recording studios and state of the art media production computers and software. The session leaders are all drawn from the creative industries, which is one of the largest sources of employment in the borough. For young people who want to move into jobs in the arts and media sector, Collage Arts offers a series of accredited training programmes with an unparralleled record of getting young people jobs in the industry.
The Voices programme includes performing arts, multi-media, singing/song-writing and creative writing and runs over the academic year with some courses in the holidays.

This year’s highlights include week-long sports camps and many hands-on activities such as jewellery making and cooking; high-energy activities including boxing, dance and swimming; creative sessions such as filmmaking and art, and lots of other activities.
Many events are free or for a small fee, and many don’t even need to be booked – you can just turn up on the day and get involved.
