Raising Tottenham’s university aspirations – event

LAE Tottenham Aspirations

Routes to Oxbridge and the Russell Group – An event for parents and carers of students in years 9 – 11

When: Tuesday 2 April from 5pm to 7pm

Where: Lilywhite House, 780 High Road, Tottenham, London N17 0BX

In 2016-17 only 1% of Tottenham school and college leavers went on to attend a Russell Group university. Although 79% of LAE Tottenham’s first cohort have an offer to study at a Russell Group university, we want to ensure that an even greater number of Tottenham students can achieve their academic aspirations.

Come to the latest Tottenham Aspirations event to hear from those involved in the admissions process at leading universities in the UK including Oxford, LSE and King’s College to find out how best to support your child’s aspirations. Questions covered will include:

  • What is it like to study at a leading university in the UK?
  • What are top universities looking for in successful applicants?
  • What opportunities are available for students in key stage 4?

Work experience opportunities for 14 to 16-year-olds

The Mental Health Collective is looking for 14, 15 and 16-year-olds to join them for some work experience in March and early April.

Students are invited to take part in an exciting project called Phone Zombies about mental health, mobile phones and moral panic.  Are mobile phones disconnecting us from each other, zoning us out and damaging our mental health?  Are we turning into phone zombies?  Or is this a moral panic – like in the 1950s when people thought that rock and roll music was poisoning teenagers’ brains?

Young people can volunteer either on their own or with friends. They can join one of three teams:

Film making team

This team will make some zombie movies about people on their phones.  The team needs people to act in and make the films.  There will be a film premiere on Sunday 31 March at the Crouch End Picture House – on a proper big cinema screen.

Research team

This team will help get to the bottom of what’s really going on with mobile phones and mental health.  They'll get involved in real, on-the-ground research to help the Mental Health Collective to figure out the key questions, write a report that will be published on the Mental Health Collective website, and be acknowledged as authors.

Marketing and Communications team

This team will lead on promoting the films and research report, so they reach the widest possible audience – getting people along to the launch event at the cinema and sharing materials online.  An April Fool’s Day joke is planned which will be the crescendo for this project.

Planning sessions will take place at the Highgate Cricket and Lawn Tennis club, off Park Road – just next to Highgate Wood school (W7 bus, nearest tube is Highgate). The Mental Health Collective is a non-profit organisation,
