Over the past two years, Campsbourne School has taken part in the national pilot of the Heartstone Project, which is fully funded by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). The project provides the opportunity for pupils, through reading the Heartstone Odyssey fantasy novel, to tackle sensitive topics such as racism, sexism, extremism and discrimination in all its forms. By tackling these issues at an early age through informal discussion, the project aims to promote resilience to intolerance, by celebrating diversity and considering the harmful effect of discrimination.
In celebration of their work, the pupils at Campsbourne are holding an event on Wednesday 7 November at 2pm to highlight their work and share it with the local community. We are delighted that The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Gina Adamou, and the Member for Hornsey and Wood Green, Catherine West MP, have both agreed to be honorary speakers at the event.
We would like to invite all primary head teachers/SLT members in Haringey to attend the event, so that you have an opportunity to witness the positive impact this project has had and to inspire more schools to take part.
A full programme of events will be sent out shortly. For further information, please contact Haringey’s Prevent Education Officer, Will Robey (will.robey@haringey.gov.uk).

In the wake of the increasing normalisation of xenophobic, misogynistic rhetoric in the UK and beyond, educators have a responsibility to resist this disturbing trend where it appears in their classrooms and school communities and to counter it through the promotion of equality and inclusivity. This isn’t easy: while balancing attainment, behaviour and pedagogy concerns, it can be hard for teachers to carve out a strong, informed response to this trend and develop their equalities practice. How does an educator best embed equalities and inclusion thinking into their classroom practice if we see inequalities as complex, interconnected and often unwittingly perpetuated?
Following our popular article in The Independent (external link), in this innovative and interactive workshop participants will explore the manifestations, implications and root causes of inequalities within their school communities, begin to craft a self-developed toolkit as to how they can more meaningfully, courageously and holistically tackle inequalities and dangerous narratives in their own classrooms.
