Rock against Racism – free music summer school at Alexandra Palace

Rock against racism flyer

Alexandra Palace is partnering with Community Music to run a week long free Music Summer School (23 to 27 July) inspired by Rock Against Racism (a campaign set up in the UK in 1976 as a response to a rise in racial conflict and the growth of white nationalist groups such as the National Front).

Working with experienced guitar, bass, drum and vocal coaches, young people will work together to create a new piece of music inspired by the Rock Against Racism Movement. The 5-day workshop is free to attend and financial support is available for food and travel if needed.

See Small Wonders at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre

Small Wonders is the new Punchdrunk/LIFT/Bernie Grant Arts Centre production, part of our wider Made In Tottenham Summer Arts Programme.

It is loosely based on Jessie Burton’s best seller The Miniaturist and was developed in part by Tottenham residents working with Punchdrunk and LIFT over several months.

There are still some spaces for school group bookings and priority will be given to Haringey schools.

The performance (as ever from Punchdrunk) is incredible and represents some of the best the UK has to offer in terms of immersive theatre. It would be truly amazing and transformative to give our young people the opportunity of witnessing it.

There are tickets available for performances at 9.30am on the following days:

Tuesday 12 June

Thursday 21 June

Thursday 5 July

Friday 6 July

Wednesday 11 July

It costs £200 per Haringey school (£250 for schools outside Haringey) with a maximum of 38 places per show.

There is a teachers’ pack available here (external link).

Book by calling the box office on 020 8365 5450.

Join in Barnardo’s Hat Day

Barnardo’s is asking teachers, parents, carers and pupils across London to take part in Hat Day on Friday 18 May.  Wear a fun hat to raise money to support the UK’s most vulnerable children. Children are encouraged to wear or make a hat signifying who or what they would like to be or do when they grow up. They can also decorate their hat with something they are passionate about such as a sport, art or a musical instrument.

The idea behind the fun is to raise money for Barnardo’s, the UK’s leading children’s charity, to help give thousands of disadvantaged children a better future. When they go into school, playgroup or children’s centre on 18 May, parents and carers can make a voluntary donation of £1 to £2 to Barnardo’s.

To register, please visit the Barnardo's website (external link) to find everything you need to make the event a success at your school, nursery, playgroup or children’s centre. The resources section has school posters, sample letters for parents and hat-making guides.

To help with ideas, Barnardo’s is launching a separate ‘Top Hat’ competition for teachers/parents for the best hat in the run up to Hat Day.  There will be a poll to decide the winner on the Barnardo’s Community Fundraising Facebook page.

UNISON training seminar for school based members

UNISON is holding a training seminar for school based members on 23 April 2018 at The Cypriot Centre in Wood Green. The aim of the seminar is to increase locally based representatives' capacity and knowledge of their roles. The event is initially being opened to up to two representatives per school. For further information please contact Haringey UNISON on 020 8489 3351. Topics covered will include school funding reform, academies and the future of schools.

We encourage all schools to facilitate the attendance of UNISON members at this event which is trade union training, as such those attending should be granted paid time off to do so. Trade unions play an important part in our schools and we value their input in both supporting individual members and dealing with the increasing range of issues in schools.

Thanks in advance

The Grove consultation meeting – rescheduled for 13 March

Owing to last week’s severe weather conditions, unfortunately we had to cancel the Grove consultation meetings at Heartlands High School.

These two meetings are rescheduled for Tuesday 13 March, taking place at 10.30 – 11.30am and at 6.00 – 7.00pm, both at Heartlands High School.

If you require any further information, please contact Leslie Boodram on 07733 323568 or 020 8826 1230 x 395.

Background:

A public consultation is now open about The Grove – a new Special School for children and young people aged 5-19 with autism. The consultation will close on 14 March 2018.

The new school will open in September 2018. Initially, primary pupils will be taught within separate accommodation located at St Mary’s Primary School, Rectory Gardens, Hornsey. Secondary pupils will continue to be taught at Heartlands High School, Wood Green, in the purpose-built accommodation previously occupied by the school’s Designated Autism Provision.

In 2019 the school will move to its permanent home on Downhills Park Road, N17, which was previously a school building. The building is undergoing a complete refurbishment to create a state- of-the-art, specialist provision for Haringey children, funded by the Department for Education.

Please see the consultation leaflet, which gives further information about Heartland Community Trust’s plans for this new school and progress so far.  The Grove_Consultation Leaflet_201801

Laughter yoga record attempt on 23 March – reminder!

Letter from the Mayor of Haringey

The Mayor of Haringey, Councillor Stephen Mann invites schools to take part in a record-breaking Laughter Yoga UK attempt at a community event on Friday 23 March at the Lordship Recreation Ground.

The Mayor wants to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote good wellbeing. The event is in support of the Mayor’s chosen charities, Mind in Haringey and Studio 306.  Laughter yoga draws on traditional yoga breathing techniques and encourages relaxation, but with a focus on giggling rather than posing, it’s suitable for all. We will be attempting to set the UK record for the most people taking part in laughter yoga at the same time and everyone is invited to take part.

As well as lots of laughter, entertainment on the day will include music, community stalls, children’s activities and prizes. The Mayor will also present prizes to the winners of his recent What Makes You Happy art competition for Haringey schools.

All teachers, children and parents are welcome. Please see the flier and letter for more information.

Cllr Mann says:

"They say that laughter is the best medicine, so combining it with yoga seems like the perfect recipe for improved wellbeing. This is a great chance for us to come together as a community, learn more about mental health issues and support two exceptional local charities, whose work is helping people all across Haringey to improve their mental health. I look forward to welcoming as many people as possible to the event, and to seeing whether we can set a new laughter yoga record.”

The event runs from 1.30-3pm on Friday 23 March. No previous yoga experience necessary!
