Home Cooked – violence reduction programme in Tottenham Hale

Home Cooked | The Bridge Renewal Trust

The Bridge Renewal Trust is leading on a consortium with Mind In Haringey, Father2Father, The Godwin Lawson Foundation and the North London Partnership Consortium (NLPC).

We have been awarded £750,000 funding (April 2021- March 2023) by the Mayor’s London Violence Reduction Unit to develop a local impactful and inclusive partnership to tackle serious youth violence in the Tottenham Hale Ward area.

Home Cooked is a violence reduction programme being co-produced and delivered in Tottenham Hale area. It is part of the Mayor’s London Violence Reduction Unit ‘My Ends’ which aims to support neighbourhoods affected by high levels of violence. It is about increasing trust and collaboration between local communities, stakeholders, key local institutions and statutory partners.

Home Cooked aims to increase sustainability of community networks, so that they are well placed to respond to local emerging needs and add long-term capacity and support to a community.

In order to do so, we will use a bottom-up approach to build a stronger, safer and inclusive Tottenham Hale.

Programme activities
Community engagement

Activities to bring the community together to capture views on the experience of living in Tottenham Hale and co-produce priorities and interventions include:

  • Community Forum
  • Youth Forum
  • Community-led research
Interventions

Home Cooked will provide funding for a range of specific interventions including:

  • Safer communities including safe youth activities
  • Education opportunities and protection from exploitation & violence
  • Positive mental health
  • Healthy family relationships
  • Employment & economic opportunities
Capacity building and networks development

The programme will also deliver a range of activities to develop capacity of local community organisations. Possible areas of support include:

  • Trauma informed practice training
  • Restorative practice
  • Contextual safeguarding
  • Resource sharing and project management support
  • Grassroots funds to support local interventions provided in a fair and transparent way.
Strong local partnership

Includes:

The Bridge Renewal Trust is a local charity based in Tottenham. We are leading the consortium of partners and will also be responsible for developing interventions that empower positive role models to be agents of change and build trust between young people and local authorities.

Godwin Lawson Foundation (GLF) was established in 2012 founded by Yvonne and Calvin Lawson to commemorate the life of their son, Godwin Lawson, who was a victim of knife crime. GLF will lead on development of interventions that support young people’s engagement with school and learning as well as protection from violence and exploitation.

Mind in Haringey is a local charity that works to improve the mental health of Haringey residents. Mind in Haringey will lead on development of preventative interventions that reduce the vulnerability of young people and trauma-informed interventions that work with victims and perpetrators to break cycles of violence.

Father2Father (F2F) works holistically to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible fathers and male role models. F2F will lead on development of interventions that take a whole family approach to building resilient families and preventing conflict.

North London Partnership Consortium (NLPC) works  to improve the socio-economic welfare of disadvantaged members of  deprived communities. NLPC will lead on the development of interventions that provide pathways to youth engagement/consultations and  economic opportunity, including life skills and jobs.

Strategic partners for the programme include Haringey Council, The local Metropolitan Police Service, local NHS organisations, The Probation Service, Developers and Housing Associations in Tottenham Hale and local Schools.

How to get involved

We particularly want to hear from young people who would like to form and create a Youth Forum or residents who wish to join the Community Forum. These forums will form part of shaping decisions that affect your community.

The Gaming Connection – online youth club for autism support

The Gaming Connection is the Haringey Language and Autism Support team’s online youth club. The sessions give young people with an autism diagnosis and an interest in gaming, the opportunity to converse online with the idea of widening their social circle.

The club was set up to encourage young people aged 14-19 to comfortably discuss their special interests and to socialise while taking part in quizzes and open discussions via Microsoft Teams.

We ran the club throughout lockdown and found that the attendees engaged well due to the various methods of communication (chat, microphone and camera). We also included the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and incorporated a home exercise routine into our sessions – which was positively received.

If you have a student who would be interested in joining The Gaming Connection, please email john.chamberlain@haringey.gov.uk

We have also included a section about what is happening in the school holidays for parents which schools can forward on to them. The objective is to keep everyone safe and informed of what’s on over the winter period as well as helping the tourism industry recover after what has been a difficult two years.
