Big School SEND

The Palace’s Creative Learning team has joined forces with Para Dance UK to run our Big Schools SEND dance initiative for more than 300 pupils at SEND schools in Haringey. The young people are taking on a number of music and dance inspired challenges, with an online performance set for broadcast via our social media channels on 16 December.

Biblio-Buzz 2022

The Alexandra Palace Children’s Book Awards 2022 – otherwise known as Biblio-buzz – will launch in December. The initiative is run in partnership between the Palace’s Creative Learning team, local libraries, schools, book shops and authors. More than 1,200 young people from across Haringey typically take part in the initiative. We’ll be announcing the shortlisted authors in the coming weeks.

A Christmas Carol

Mark Gatiss’ critically acclaimed A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story is now running in the Palace’s Victorian Theatre and will continue throughout the festive period and into 2022. This month, alongside the start of the performance, we’re running a series of drama workshops for young people in the Creativity Pavilion. The sessions, led by the Crouch End Youth Theatre, will give participants the chance to re-interpret classic characters and festive tales.

Locating lost Child Trust Funds – virtual event for teachers on Thursday 4 November

The Share Foundation poster

Over 50% of young adults are not claiming their Child Trust Funds

The Share Foundation is actively trying to support all young people nationwide aged 16-19 to locate their Child Trust Fund accounts.

Teachers of students in Year 12 and 13 can play a vital role in getting the message cross to these young people, so the Foundation has arranged a virtual event specifically for them.

We would be most grateful if you could support this event by passing on this information to the relevant department within your school or college, to inform as many teachers as possible of the virtual event (30 minutes) taking place on Thursday 4 November.

PLEASE HELP YOUNG PEOPLE AT YOUR SCHOOL TO FIND THEIR ACCOUNTS

Thursday 4 November at 12 noon or 5 pm.

Virtual event registration: www.sharefound.org/teachers1 for 12 noon

or: www.sharefound.org/teachers2 for 5 pm

Registered charity The Share Foundation, which works for the Department for Education (Children’s Services), is working hard to ensure that young people aged 16-19 are informed about their accounts, already open in their name; and that they know how to claim them from their account provider.

We’ve developed a special web search facility in conjunction with the account providers and HMRC, and we’ve produced three short videos specially designed for this age group which we can provide with a script for in-school presentations.

Teachers can play a vital role in getting the message across: please help your students!

Please display this poster where students can see it: The Share Foundation poster

Unity Xtra ‘Vax Chat’ campaign

Haringey Council is working with Unity Xtra in producing a series of radio shows called ‘Vax Chat’ to open peer-led discussions with young people in Haringey about the COVID-19 vaccine.

The programmes, which begin on the 20 October 6-8pm for four weeks will be live on www.unityxtra.com and also live streamed on Instagram and YouTube.

Each episode will focus on a theme of interest to young people, and together with young medical professionals, they will explore the facts and the fiction around the vaccine to enable the audience to make an informed choice about what’s best for them.

We want to reach as many young people as possible, aged 16-25 across Haringey and nearby boroughs so that they can be part of the conversation. Questions can be submitted on social media @UnityXtra or by emailing: info@unityxtra.com

We would really appreciate your support with this campaign which will be primarily driven online. For full details of how you can help us spread the word, including access to social media graphics and suggested social post wording, please visit: COVID-19 resources | Haringey Council

Half term Xplorer orienteering session in Priory Park on Wednesday 27 October

It is time to explore Haringey!

Haringey is running a free Xplorer orienteering session for children in Priory Park on Wednesday 27 October (during half-term).

Xplorer is a fun navigation challenge that gives children a sense of adventure as they explore the park to find set markers. It’s a great opportunity for children to learn map skills and get some exercise by running around outside.

This event is aimed at children aged 4-11 years.

Parents and children just need to turn up. It is entirely free and we’ll give them worksheets and maps.

When you arrive at the park, head to the café where there will be Haringey Council officers waiting for you. They will provide you with maps and worksheets.

The event will be running between 10am and 3pm. Please come along at any point within these times. The activity will take roughly an hour to complete.
