Relationships and Sex Education day – 27 June 2019

National Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) day will be a celebration of excellent RSE that educates children and young people about healthy relationships and positive sexual health. This is the first year this has been celebrated nationally, and provides an opportunity to highlight the new national guidance for Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education which will be mandatory from September 2020.

On 27 June 2019, schools, teachers, young people, families and the wider community are invited to:

  • Nominate excellent teachers of RSE for the RSE teaching awards. The Deadline for nominations is Friday 31 May 2019
  • Hold RSE activities, using the following ideas for primary schools and secondary schools
  • Use social media, such as twitter, to share your RSE activities with pride and confidence – follow @RSE_day and use the hashtags #RSEday and #RSEtogether
  • Tell your local community about your RSE activities through a newsletter, web-site update, local newspaper or other media.

To support your journey in preparing for mandatory RSE, the Sex Education Forum has produced a useful roadmap which sets out the 10 steps for providing high quality RSE.

Free Youth Mental Health First Aid training

Haringey Council is rolling out free two-day Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for schools, which will provide staff with the skills and confidence to spot early signs of mental health needs in a young person, offer mental health ‘first aid’ and, if appropriate, guide them towards other support they may need.

The provision of this training is part of the Mayor of London’s programme to ensure that every school in London has at least one Youth Mental Health First Aider. More information can be found in the attached leaflet.

If you would like a member of staff to benefit from this free training, they need to:

  • email healthy.schools@haringey.gov.uk  with their name, role and email address;
  • select one of the groups as their preferred option;
  • identify a second group as back-up, as some of the groups are now filling up.

The groups will be delivered on:

  • Friday 7 June and Friday 14 June
  • Monday 17 June and Tuesday 18 June
  • Thursday 20 June and Friday 21 June
  • Thursday 26 September and Thursday 3 October

Every effort will be made to meet preferred options, but courses will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Depending on interest, we may be able to offer more than one place to those on the waiting list, but this is not guaranteed.

All training will take place from 9am to 5pm at Hornsey School for Girls and will be delivered by professionals from Haringey Council and Whittington Health NHS Trust.

House of Commons passes Relationships, Sex and Health Education legislation

On 27 March the House of Commons voted to pass new regulations regarding Relationships, Sex and Health education. If the proposed regulations are passed by the House of Lords, statutory guidance will be produced and published, and schools will be expected to adhere to the guidance and ensure their curriculum is LGBT inclusive.

Although MP’s have voted in favour of the regulations, hundreds of parents have expressed their concern, with some parents protesting. As a result, various schools in Birmingham have suspended LGBT inclusive lessons, due to the religious beliefs of parents which they feel do not align with the proposed regulations.

The Department for Education’s draft guidance, highlighted that it would be permissible for schools with a religious character to deliver the curriculum with a “distinctive faith perspective on relationships" and allow for debate in relation to matters that are seen as controversial in respect to the school’s faith.

Other issues and concerns for parents surround the appropriateness of the material that children are to be taught, even though it is expected that the curriculum will be adapted to accommodate pupil’s age, as well as the right of parents to educate their children regarding matters related to sex and relationships.

Watch an Active Mile in action and win a visit from Sir Mo Farah

Active Miles are 15-minute initiatives that encourage children to get outside and walk, jog or run around a mile regularly, in the playground, around school buildings, or at a nearby park. Research on The Daily Mile, a popular example of an Active Mile, tells us that doing one reduces body fat, and schools report that it increases concentration and may even raise attainment.

Two Haringey schools are offering opportunities for you to come and see it in action:

  • Bounds Green Primary (Wednesday 8 May 09:00) and
  • Lordship Lane Primary (Thursday 16 May 09:15).
  • Please email Healthy.Schools@haringey.gov.uk if you would like to attend.

The Daily Mile is running a competition for one school to win a visit from Sir Mo Farah! If you are currently running  or  starting to run The Daily Mile, sign-up to the website, and return the short questionnaire by 31 May.

Nominate an Active School Hero

Do you know someone who works in a primary school who always goes above and beyond the call of duty to get kids active, really “going the extra mile”?

Why not nominate them to be an Active School Hero? Active School Hero is a scheme run in a partnership between ukactive Kids and Nike and supported by a range of sporting organisations including Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust.

They are looking for heroes who demonstrate enthusiasm to inspire children to be more active and act as a positive role model for both kids and other staff within their school.

It would be great if the hero has an inspiring story to tell around how activity has helped change their own life as well as those of the kids.

Nominations are free and you can nominate as many Heroes as you would like – but you can’t nominate yourself. An Active School Hero must …

It can be any school staff member in a London primary school who helps kids be active; from the lollypop lady, teaching assistant and librarian to the catering staff, active travel lead or the after school activities manager.

Nominate your Active School Hero here.

Here is a toolkit for schools.

Nominations will close on Monday 8 April.
