Coughs and colds in children: NHS advice

As COVID restrictions ease and people mix more, the NHS is seeing an increase in (non-COVID) respiratory illness in children,

For the majority of children, respiratory illnesses (coughs and colds) are not serious, and they will soon recover following rest and plenty of fluids. Some children under two however, especially those born prematurely or with a heart condition, can experience more severe illness.

Parents and carers are encouraged to look out for symptoms of a severe infection and to contact a healthcare professional when they are concerned.

Local GP Dr Oliver Anglin says:

“Respiratory infections in children are very common and most of the time your child can be looked after safely at home, without seeing a doctor.

Symptoms of severe respiratory infection in children include a dry and persistent cough and finding it hard to breathe – which could be rapid or noisy breathing (wheezing) or drawing in of the muscles below their lower ribs, at their neck, or between their ribs.

You should contact your GP or call NHS 111 if your child has problems breathing, has taken less than half their usual amount during the last two or three feeds, has had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more, or has a persistent high temperature of 38C or above.

I recommend you have a look at this great, simple NHS health advice for parents and carers booklet which will help you work out whether your child can be looked after at home with some help from the pharmacist or if they need to be seen by a doctor.”

The NHS health advice for parents and carers booklet is available to download in Bengali, Greek, Gujarati, Persian (Farsi), Somali and Turkish on the North London Partners website.

The NHS has produced a short booklet to help parents and carers understand when and how to seek health support and advice if they are worried about their child this summer and autumn.

The publication aims to help ensure children and young people receive the care and support they need at the right time and in the right place. It contains important information on respiratory conditions – which we may see an increase of from late summer.

Please can you share the publication with parents and carers via any upcoming newsletters or other appropriate communication channels.

The Spring Stride – competition winners

Throughout May 2021, Public Health ran a physical activity competition with Haringey primary schools called The Spring Stride. This was an initiative to get children moving again after lockdown, with the aim to help children recognise the value and enjoyment in regular exercise.

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation delivered half-day activity sessions with the children, and each school tracked their progress and submitted activity data weekly. Schools were also provided with worksheets to encourage pupils to reflect on the activity they did.

Outcome of competition

Lots of schools took part in the competition. On average, participating pupils did 1-3 activity sessions (run, walk, games, classroom-based exercises) lasting for 15 minutes or more every day, above and beyond their normal activity levels at school!

St John Vianney Catholic Primary School put together a video full of photos and clips from the competition, which you can see here.

The winners

1) Seven Sisters Primary School (N15)

2) St Michael’s CE Primary School (N22)

3) Ferry Lane Primary School (N17)

4) St John Vianney Catholic Primary School (N15)

All four schools have been awarded with an Amazon gift voucher, and Seven Sisters have also won a Tottenham Takeover Day to be delivered by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

Overall, schools really enjoyed the competition, and we hope to run it again later in the year, or next year.

Haringey’s #ProudToProtect COVID-19 vaccine campaign

We’ve launched an exciting social media campaign to celebrate everyone across Haringey who’s getting vaccinated to help protect themselves and their loved ones from #COVID-19.

We want to encourage everyone who lives and works in the borough to share that they’ve had their vaccine and show everyone how proud they are.

When it’s time to get the COVID-19 vaccine, people can get involved by:

  • Sharing a picture or video of themselves getting the jab, with their vaccine card, or wearing their vaccination sticker
  • Telling us why they’re proud to be vaccinated (e.g. to protect their loved ones, to help get the world back to normal etc.)
  • Tagging @HaringeyCouncil on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram
  • And including the hashtag #ProudToProtect

Keep a look out, we’ll be re-sharing some of these posts on our social media channels.

Launching the Primary Spring Stride 2021

As we all know, it is important to encourage children to participate in regular physical activity to promote good physical and mental wellbeing. The benefits of exercise can also be seen in the classroom with improved concentration and memory function. However, we have heard from many of our schools that children’s weight and physical fitness have been impacted by lockdown.

This is why we are launching The Spring Stride! The Spring Stride is a brand-new physical activity competition between primary schools in Haringey. It will take place from Tuesday 4 to Friday 28 May and all primary schools have had the opportunity to sign up. Participating primary schools are competing to do 25 days of physical activity. Daily physical activity could be The Daily Mile, sports, games, or classroom-based exercise.

During the competition, schools can get additional support from local partners. This includes:

  • Half-day sports session for pupils – The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Primary Stars team are offering free half-day sessions of football-based fun during the competition period. Please be aware that sessions were offered on a first-come-first-served basis and have now all been allocated.
  • Workshops for parents – One You Haringey are providing virtual workshops for all parents of children participating in The Spring Stride. Three 1 hour-long workshops will take place over the competition period. The sessions will cover cardiovascular activity, resistance activity and behaviour change.
  • Fitt-in access – Fitt-in are offering all participating schools a free trial of the Fitt-in platform for the competition period. Fitt-in offers online exercise videos for classroom-based physical activity. An annual subscription for a school usually costs £500. In addition, Fitt-in will send a couple of their instructors, whom you see on the videos, to the most active Fitt-in Haringey primary school to provide a live Fitt-in class.

Prizes are:

  • 1st place – £500 Amazon voucher and a Tottenham Takeover Day including special Spurs guests (provided by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation)
  • 2nd place – £250 Amazon voucher and support from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation at your school sports day
  • 3rd place – £250 Amazon voucher

The formal deadline to sign up for the competition was Thursday 29 April, but if you are keen to sign up then please get in touch with healthy.schools@haringey.gov.uk as soon as possible.
