Healthy Start Vouchers – many families are missing out

You can find out more about Healthy Start Vouchers on our website here Healthy Start Vouchers | Haringey Council – in a nutshell it is up to £900 of support to low income parents of young children under 4 years old and/or expectant mothers. That is £900 per child.

It’s especially important now we try and get the word out, as many parents/new parents are not fully accessing wider support due to COVID-19 and maybe missing out on this information. This is an NHS product.

What is the council doing?

  • There is a dedicated staff member pushing it.
  • Healthy Start Vouchers is part of the Haringey Here To Help Campaign, so if you are on Facebook or Twitter, you can share the information to your followers there (I know many of you are, thank you).
  • We are working with partners like children’s centres, schools, etc to get awareness up.
  • Training for partners to help people fill in the form
  • We are also getting local retailers to sign up to accept the vouchers so parents do not have to keep travelling to supermarkets to redeem the vouchers and can also purchase food related to their culture if they wish (as well as a community wealth building benefit).

How many people have applied?

  • Our data shows that over 3100 families could be eligible.
  • We currently have 1521 signed up so around 50%

How can you help?

Please can share within your networks or WhatsApp groups, mutual aid groups etc.

If you need anything, like leaflets, posters or maybe printed copies of the form then please email Linda.Edward@haringey.gov.uk who is really helpful and really determined to get as many eligible people signed up as possible. There is also information in other languages she can send you.

Sexual health: ‘We’re open’ social media campaign – competition to design an image

Sexual Health Session Competition Poster – Youth Settings

Did you know that young people say that embarrassment, stigma, and lack of knowledge are barriers to accessing sexual health services? This is a concern as data shows that 16-25 year olds are at greater risk of sexual ill health.

Did you know that according to government guidance,  by the time young people reach 16 they should know “…how to get… advice, including how and where to access confidential sexual and reproductive health treatment” (DfE 2019)In Haringey we support this because we want our young residents to have the skills and knowledge to make healthy choices and have safe relationships.

The ‘We’re Open’ Social Media Campaign aims to let young people know that we offer a range of clinics and pharmacies which provide free, friendly, and confidential sexual health advice. Since the launch we have had over 5000 clicks by young people, with Snapchat outperforming other platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, YouTube…).

Competition: design an image for a social media campaign

We want the young people you work with to help spread the message about our ‘We’re Open’ campaign,  so we are asking them to design their own campaign image. We recommend that this activity is part of a relationships and sexual health session which you can do 121 or in small groups- see session ideas attached.

The young people (18 and under) can submit their final images into a Haringey competition (in association with the Healthy Schools Programme). The winner will receive £100 in Amazon vouchers, and their school/college/education setting will receive £500 in Amazon vouchers. Go to our ‘Relationships and Sex Education’ web-pages for more information.

The deadline for to submit their images/poster is 30 June 2021 to HealthySchools@Haringey.gov.uk. The aim is to use the winning images as part of our new young people’s sexual health campaign to be launched over the summer – see competition poster attached

For queries, additional information about the campaign, competition or copies of the resources please email anna.martinez@haringey.gov.uk or maria.schmidt@haringey.gov.uk

Adrenaline Auto Injector pens – a reminder to collect yours!

AAI letter to schools March 2021

We are in the Spring term and soon will be in the Summer term, a time where allergy triggers like pollen, trees, grasses, and weeds are high. With this in mind, it is important that we ensure that all the remaining schools pick up their allocation of Adrenaline auto injector pens. Many schools have not yet collected their pens.

The free “Spare pens” are only for Haringey council maintained primary and secondary schools. Unfortunately we are unable to provide free “Spare pens” to Haringey independent and private schools or children centres and nurseries.

We have received the new batch of Adrenaline auto injector (AAI) pens for Haringey primary and secondary schools. The brand we will supply will be the Jext® brand of Adrenaline Auto Injector (AAI) pens.

The “spare” AAI(s) pens can be used if the pupil’s own prescribed AAI(s) are not immediately available (for example, because they are broken, out-of-date, have misfired or been wrongly administered). They do not replace the pupil’s own supply of AAI pens.

Please contact Firoz Mazumder the named person at St Ann’s pharmacy department on 020 8702 5421 or email  firoz.mazumder@nhs.net to arrange a time to pick up your allocation of pens.

These pens are replacing the expired Dec 2020 AAI pens and will expire in March 2022.  It is important that schools ensure they have AAI pens that are in date and not expired.

Please complete the AAI supply form before collection and follow instructions in this letter: Adrenaline auto injection pens – letter to schools

Rapid COVID-19 test centres move to seven day operation

Haringey’s rapid testing sites for people who do not show any of the Covid-19 symptoms will become a seven day a week operation from Monday I February.

The rapid tests are offered to everyone but particularly to all frontline workers who come into direct contact with the public day-to-day and those that regularly have to use public transport.

Following feedback from key and frontline workers, the opening hours will be extended.

Haringey currently offers two centres at 48 Station Road Wood Green and at the Tottenham Community Sports Centre. A third site is opening at Alexandra Palace.

From Monday 1 February the centres will be open every day:

Monday 8am – 4pm
Tuesday/Wednesday 8am – 8pm
Thursday/Friday/Saturday 8am – 4pm
Sunday 10am – 2pm

Dr Will Maimaris, Haringey’s Director of Public Health, comments:

“Around one in three people who have COVID-19 don’t know they have it, but they can still pass it on to other people, who may fall very ill. Since the start of the new national lockdown we made frontline and critical workers a priority for lateral flow testing. It is one of the essential tools to help reduce the spread – which even though the numbers are falling now – will need to be maintained for the foreseeable future. I’d like to urge anyone who has to leave home for work to take the test at least once, if not twice a week – it will make a big difference. I hope employers encourage their staff to do the right thing, as this will help us get numbers down and start to get life back to normal.”
