Three Haringey schools win TfL travel awards

Three Haringey schools were winners at TfL’s STARS Top School’s awards event at City Hall this week. The awards were given to schools who are doing brilliant work to encourage students and staff to walk, cycle, scoot or use public transport for their journey to and from school rather than driving. 

The three winning schools were:

  • Stamford Hill Primary School who won  ‘School of the Region north London’ for promoting healthy lifestyles and working with local communities and charities.
  • Crowland Primary School  who won ‘Excellence in Walking’ for increasing the number of pupils walking by 13% from last year using their 5 minute Walking Zone map and creating a school song
  • Rhodes Avenue Primary School  who won  ‘Excellence in Scooting’ have 28% of pupils scooting to school and under 4% travelling by car despite increasing in size.

Elin Weston, Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families.said, “This is a fantastic achievement for Haringey schools and shows the progress we are making to be one of the most walking and cycling friendly borough in London.”

News from Mulberry Primary School

The Mulberry Primary School is one of Haringey's largest primary schools and is proud of its cultural and linguistic diversity.  Over 720 children and staff from around the globe bring a wealth of experiences, including 45 different languages. The school has made significant improvements over the last two years.  We are learning and achieving with families to ensure all children achieve their potential.

Of the review, Headteacher Michelle Akarsu says,

I am incredibly proud of the achievements staff and children have made during the last two years.  The Mulberry Primary School is a rapidly improving school where learning is creative, inclusive and fun with lots of challenge setting ambitious goals for the future.

Black History Celebrations
David Lammy joined children at The Mulberry Primary School to celebrate Black History Month. David Lammy spoke to the children about his experiences growing up in Tottenham.  He met the School Council and had a tour of the school.  Razzan stated, "he is such a good role model." David Lammy had a wonderful time touring the school.  He stated there are certainly some future leaders in the making on school council.

Silver Healthy School Award

The Willow Primary school join a handful of primaries who have attained a silver award from BOTH the Healthy schools London programme and Healthy Schools National Programme.

The Willow Primary school is officially a Healthy Schools Silver award winner AND Healthy School London Silver school winner too!

Headteacher, Dawn Ferdinand, said,

I am of course so proud that our school’s vision to provide a good all round healthy experience for children has been recognised at both this national and London-wide level. We are so very proud to be a Silver status Healthy school!

Risley Avenue Primary in the Parliamentary Review

Risley Avenue Primary School has been selected to appear in the 2015/16 edition of The Parliamentary Review. Established by former minister The Rt Hon David Curry shortly after the 2010 general election, The Parliamentary Review’s September release has become a key fixture in the political calendar.

Risley Avenue Primary School features alongside The Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Philip Hammond, and a small number of outstanding schools in the Primary Education South of England edition. The main aim of The Review is to showcase best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector, with this edition aimed particularly at leading policymakers and executives within Primary Education.
