STARS Travel Plans

Please start uploading your activities now, or contact Wendy Thorogood as soon as possible to set up and learn more about the free resources on offer to make sure Haringey’s schools have safety and active travel embedded in their education plans.

We can inspire pupils to make changes to improve their health and lifestyles through delivering these interesting activities. Wendy Thorogood can come along to staff meetings to help explain how our messages and work fits directly into your everyday curriculum and planning.

Hands Up Survey

The most important part of the travel plan every year is to record the Hands up Survey for all pupils and staff. So please make this a priority before the end of term. See the Stars website (external link).

Celebration events in February

Celebration Events for all schools will be held at the Professional Development Centre in February.

Wednesday 7 February Nursery and Early Years

Thursday 8 February Primary 9:30 – 12 or 12:30 – 2pm

Email wendy.thorogood@haringey.gov.uk to secure a place for you and 4 pupils

Road Safety Issues

We are receiving a lot of requests to combat parking on school ‘keep clear’ lines.

Please make sure you raise this issue in your newsletters to parents. Yes, they are only dropping their child off, but in the meantime other children are put in danger. Keep copies as evidence. If you are one of the 18 schools with a Walking Zone, please re-issue them, attach them to the parents’ emails and make sure they are given to EVERY visitor coming to your site. This information alsoreally needs to be on the contact us page on your website and definitely included in your induction packs for new families.

Junior Travel Ambassadors

Schools were recently sent an email with information and application forms. Please upload all evidence as soon as you carry out an assembly,  competition or other relevant activity.

School travel plans – Smarter Travel update

We are very pleased to see so many schools taking part in the school travel plan scheme. We currently have 65 schools, with at least 4 more joining the scheme this school year.

This year’s record number of Gold (28) and Silver (14) accreditations shows how dedicated our schools are to delivering these messages and encouraging our young people to develop a sense of being responsible, active, safe and independent.  The life skills of road safety and improvements to health are extremely important, enabling this developing generation to gain a good knowledge of how their actions affect their own futures and that of the planet.

The TfL STARS scheme is a great way to record your school Improvements and cover the health and safety factors that Ofsted look for in their inspections.

We are available to assist every school to create an active travel plan that can be updated throughout the year to reflect any issues that arise.

The information that you enter in the issues section of the STARS travel plan is a vital tool that we use to help you improve the road and traffic around your school.

We look at this plan when schools ask for assistance with local road issues and essential user permits.

Visit the TfL STARS website (external link) to create an account and start uploading stories and information.

Finding Hari – free orienteering activity

Hari the bear is out and about in Haringey again celebrating October’s International Walking Month.

The Smarter Travel Team have devised a resource which is suitable for Key Stage 1 and early years (but could also be an option for key stage 2).

This activity will help you cover many parts of the school travel plan, links to healthy schools and offers an educational bonus of geography, maths, English and science. Plus everyone gets extra exercise.

Fifteen different teddy pictures are located in 5 Haringey parks: Lordship Rec, Bruce Grove, Markfield, Chestnuts and Priory Parks. The images were created by Haringey pupils last year and contain important messages about road safety, active travel and anti-pollution.

We are encouraging all of our primary schools and nurseries to visit one of the parks, log how many people join in and tell us. If you can count your steps that would be good too. Find the pictures and either take a photo or write down what the message is on all 15 bears.

Prizes: every class taking part which lets us know will be entered into a prize draw to win one of four scooters.

Send the evidence to your School Travel Plan co-ordinator or to Wendy Thorogood:

Smarter Travel team celebrates

Haringey's Smarter Travel team is celebrating another successful year with 65 School Travel Plans –  of which 28 schools achieved Gold accreditation, 14 Silver and 23 Bronze.

This means that 62% of our schools are engaged and have a current travel plan.  These school communities are more informed about  the health benefits of actively travelling to school, as well as other benefits like reducing rush hour traffic and air pollution and increasing physical activity and road safety.

Our schools benefit from additional acknowledgments of their achievements by winning TfL awards under the TfL STARS School Travel Plan.

We are keen to promote World Car Free Day on 22 September and want to encourage schools to take part. One school that is getting involved is Lordship Lane Primary School, which is holding a 'Play Street' after school on 29 September.

The Smarter Travel team is looking forward to an exciting year ahead and is planning to encourage more walking, cycling and fitness in Haringey, as well as rolling out new orienteering resource packs for schools to include in their curriculum plans.

STARS school travel plans are a winning solution and a way to access more free resources and activities contact the Smarter Travel team for more support: Smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk

Secondary school transition – win a bike competition

Every year we offer the Moving Up Magazine for year 6 pupils who will be transitioning to secondary school. The magazine includes a competition to win a bike. If you did not receive enough copies of the magazine, please contact the Haringey Smarter Travel team to obtain some more.

Eleven-year-olds are the most vulnerable age group at risk of road traffic accidents. Some will be travelling to school on their own for the first time. They are entitled to a TfL Zip Oyster card for free bus travel in London. The Moving Up Competition is aimed at encouraging students to think about their journey, planning a route using public transport. Please encourage your students to do this, it could be a very valuable lesson and with just over 3000 pupils transitioning to secondary school in Haringey, there is a good chance of winning a bike.

We are happy to accept entries from your pupils using your school name as the contact rather than their home address. Please send your entries to: Smarter Travel Team, Haringey Council, 5th Floor, Alexandra House, 10 Station Road, Wood Green, N22 7TR.
