Trading Services is offering a new tree inspection services for schools and other educational establishments, which will provide a record of your trees, including their management and maintenance requirements. If you are interested in this service, please refer to the Traded Services online portal (external link).
Planned tree inspections will ensure your trees are maintained appropriately and do not present a safety risk or nuisance to pupils, staff and the school buildings. We will provide technical advice to site managers regarding their tree-related responsibilities. We will also offer the option of tendering the work through our procurement system, which currently has six tree work contractors offering competitive quotations.
Trees in and around schools enhance the local landscape by providing a wide range of environmental and social benefits. These can have a positive impact on the lives of pupils and staff. Trees generally require a minimal amount of maintenance over their lifespan. Most commonly this will involve pruning low branches to increase clearance for pedestrians or pruning branches away from buildings or other infrastructure.Trees in schools do however pose insurance concerns, owing to the potential risks that can occur if a tree or part of a tree was to fail: with the potential for injury to pupils, staff or visitors.
In order to minimise the risk of potential accidents occurring in schools, we recommend that trees are inspected periodically by a qualified and experienced arboriculturist. Haringey’s Tree & Nature Conservation Team can provide a tree inspection service for schools. Inspections will be carried out by our own in-house arboricultural officers.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was ratified in 2016 by the European Union (EU) to strengthen citizens' fundamental rights in the digital age and facilitate business by simplifying rules for organisations in the online digital age.
We are holding 2 training sessions in September to brief school staff members in preparation for GDPR. These will be facilitated by Remora, an independent consultancy specialising in cyber security. Remora apply their expertise in firms and organisations to help assess business-wide cyber and data security risk to create mitigation strategies.
The main points of the latest EU GDPR draft include:
- personal data is the property of the person;
- personal data is electronic, paper, file notes, fingerprints, CCTV…….
- very specific consent is required to use personal data;
- a person can request a copy of all personal data within 30 days;
- that copy must be in transportable format;
- a person can request erasure of all personal data;
- failure to comply will attract potentially seriously punitive penalties;
- failure to protect personal data is a breach of GDPR;
- privacy needs to be built into all systems and processes.
The training will make GDPR an operational reality in your school by:
- coaching you on data security policy;
- guiding you to create/update your data retention and disposal policy;
- assisting you with definition of a Governance framework with appropriate policies;
- creating your Response Plan: breach identification, resource mobilization, and appropriate disclosure;
- define an operational implementation plan.

Introducing BT ComputAbility
We are pleased to offer BT's ComputAbility service, which allows schools to link with families to enable them to access the curriculum remotely. ComputAbility empowers parents to change how technology is used in the classroom.
ComputAbility presents an alternative way for schools and colleges to close the IT skills gap in education, enabling technology-based learning. It is a "parent partnership 1:1 programme" between your school and your pupils' parents or guardians, where they fund the technology their children need to get the most from the teaching and learning experience, both in school and at home.
Compared to buying outright on the high street*, the investment is made affordable for parents because of both the economies of scale that come from a large group purchase, and regular "bite-sized" monthly payments required. Once the final payment is made the device is theirs to keep.
BT offers a wide range of devices from trusted brands including Apple, HP and Lenovo. BT will help you to decide on the appropriate devices to include in your programme, which complement both your existing systems and your school's wider technology strategy.
This service is offered for a token fee of £50 which is payable by the school. This is our initial entry point for schools to begin an annual engagement with BT for BT ComputAbility at your school. The token fee initially charged is to cover the initial engagement process. Our understanding is that normally no further fees are payable by the school.
For further information please contact Michael Welton on 020 8489 2441/ 07792 437567 Email: michael.welton@haringey.gov.uk
*Savings depend on the actual make and model of products selected and the comparative typical alterative high street price at the time of your programme’s launch. A full illustration will be provided.
