The Smarter Travel team would like to support schools in delivering various programmes during this difficult period. We have resources and information online to continue our work. We would appreciate if you could work on the Stars programme and complete the Hand up surveys.
The Brake Road safety week runs from 16- 22 November and you can apply for resources online.
To help schools to be more active, we have a lot of information on walking, cycling and scooting. For further support please do not hesitate to email us on Smarter.Travel@haringey.gov.uk.
Walk, cycle or scoot your school journey
We want to make sure that those who can are walking, cycling or scooting to school. We have seen an increase in the numbers of people driving short journeys since the Covid-19 pandemic, causing congestion, pollution and road safety issues. It is often much quicker to walk your 10 minute journey to school than to drive and end up waiting in traffic around the school gates. Please promote this to your parents/carers and ask them to travel actively.
TfL’s school bus services
As you may know, TfL have been running additional buses on some of their routes for school-only services. These school bus services were due to finish at October half term, but are now being extended until the end of autumn term. Please let your students know that they should continue to travel on the school services if they have been since September.
TfL STARS school travel planning
We are still urgently waiting for your Hands Up Survey figures. We have great difficulty assisting schools when we have no idea what your issues are or how many people are coming to school by car.
The STARS Hands-Up Survey is easy: you send your colleagues a link to an online form, they count how each child came to school in their class – it goes directly into the surveys. They then do same for the adults in the class. Your Travel Champion only has to collect information from non-teaching staff and enter this too.
Call us to access the TfL Stars Site or send you a link to make it really easy for you. If you don’t have a travel champion in place, please email Smarter.Travel@haringey.gov.uk to get started.
The Golden Lock – cycling and scooting incentive
We have boxes of prizes waiting for schools who want to increase the number of pupils cycling/scooting to school. These are generous and make a huge impact. We have filled them with 16 different cycle/scooter related prizes and will deliver them with instructions.
To qualify, you must complete your hands up survey on STARS, email us and we will deliver one of our boxes. Please contact Smarter.Travel@haringey.gov.uk if you are unsure on how to get started.
Cycle training
Our cycle training company Cycle Confident has funds from us now. Please liaise with them to arrange bikeability training for your students, we are very keen to support you with cycle training once again.
Free online cycle training course
Whether you’re popping to the shops or going to work, there has never been a better time to cycle.
TfL’s free online Cycle Skills course will help you to cycle safely and confidently. So, whether you’re new to cycling or just want to brush up on your skills, we can help you take to the road. What you’ll learn:
