Outstanding for All Awards 2018 – nominations are now open!

Do you know an inspirational teacher, student, governor or member of school support staff?

Nominations are now open for the sixth annual Outstanding for All awards. The awards celebrate the fantastic achievements of the teachers, students, staff and governors whose phenomenal efforts have helped make education in Haringey top class.

With the summer holidays fast approaching, we would love it if you could think of someone who has made a difference over the past school year (or longer) – whether that is an extra special achievement, overcoming adversity, or going that extra mile.

There are a range of categories, from Teacher of the Year and community hero, to Early Years Champion and Achievement in STEM.

You can see the full  list of categories here and watch a video of last year’s nominees.

We will invite everyone who is nominated to a celebratory awards ceremony later this year, which will focus on a myriad of fantastic things happening in our schools. Watch this space for news about the venue – we are working on something extra special this year!

We will be publicising this event at the start of the autumn term and there will be further opportunities to nominate, but this gives you an opportunity for an early nomination over the summer.

Exciting programme of summer activities in Haringey

Haringey has prepared an exciting programme of activities for children and young people taking place during the summer holidays:

Summer activities for children and young people 2018

The council has teamed up with a host of local schools, sports clubs, parks and arts venues to put together a programme of activities designed to keep children busy during the long summer break. From sporting activities like football, swimming and tennis, to arts and crafts and acting, there is something for everyone.

Printed copies of this leaflet will be delivered to all schools, nurseries and youth groups in Haringey by the end of next week, Friday 13 July. We have printed enough copies for every primary school aged child in Haringey to be able to take one home. Please can you ensure that these leaflets are given out to the children in your school.

Governing boards’ role in Ofsted inspections

Ofsted has published an update for its inspectors (external link)  which includes the following clarification on governing boards' role during the inspection:

“It has been brought to our attention that some schools have not informed all of their governors/trustees about the inspection of their school, nor invited them to meet inspectors during the inspection.

Inspectors should make clear to the headteacher, at the start of the inspection, that all governors/trustees must be informed of the inspection and that arrangements should be made for inspectors to meet the chair of governors/chair of the board of trustees and as many governors/trustees as possible during the inspection, and that as many governors/trustees as possible should also be invited to attend the final feedback meeting.”

Ofsted has previously clarified that all those on the governing board should be informed of the provisional outcome, including those who are unable to attend the final feedback meeting.

The update also highlights some other issues that are relevant to governing boards:

  • the new Department for Education (DfE) guidance (external link)    on safeguarding recommends that schools hold more than one emergency contact number for each pupil (above the legal minimum);
  • inspectors will ask secondary school leaders about what they are doing in response to the DfE’s ambition (external link)    for the vast majority of pupils to study the EBacc;
  • inspectors will consider  the DfE's recent guuidance (external link) on gender separation in mixed schools;
  • that caution is required when considering the performance of groups of pupils (for example, by pupil characteristic), particularly small groups;
  • Ofsted has no expectation about how primary schools should be carrying out assessment or recording pupils’ achievements and there is no requirement for numerical data to be used.

Analyse School Performance (ASP) – change to sign in process

Analyse School Performance (ASP) is the official data dashboard provided free to schools by the Department for Education (DfE). It replaced RAISEonline in July last year and gives school leaders a comprehensive overview of performance against headline measures. Governors and trustees are entitled to access the service and it is an essential resource for holding a school to account and monitoring performance.

While governors may be familiar with the secure access login portal, the login page for ASP is changing. Users of ASP will now need to set up an account with the DfE sign-in service. You can see details of how to do this here (external link).

Haringey Music Service moves to Dynamic Purchasing System

In September, the Haringey Music Service, in conjunction with the council’s Strategic Procurement team, is implementing a new Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS), which is compliant with the latest procurement regulations. The DPS will enable Haringey Music Service to procure music tuition in an efficient and cost effective way.

The council currently uses an online DPS platform via its strategic partner adam, which covers a number of different services including care homes and passenger transport.

Once they have completed the enrolment process, peripatetic music teachers will be able to use the DPS to look at teaching vacancies, submit bids for work and process their invoices.

Drop in sessions

The Procurement team is organising a series of drop-in sessions for music teacher during the summer, where team members will be able to help with the enrolment process.

The Music Service does not anticipate the new system will have a major impact on the way it works with schools, but please be aware of the changes in case teachers ask you questions or share any concerns.

If you have any questions or require further information, you can contact the procurement project team via dps-enquiries@haringey.gov.uk
