Consultation on proposed admission arrangements – Eden Primary School

FAO of all Haringey schools

The Governors of Eden Primary School are consulting on changes to their admission arrangements for entry in September 2020.

The change is that priority 4 (after siblings), ‘Children of founding directors’ has been removed from the arrangements and replaced by ‘Children of Eden primary staff where the member of staff has been employed at the school for a period of two or more years…’ This is to help with recruitment and retention of staff and is common practice amongst other similar schools.

You will find details of the proposed arrangements on the Eden website at www.edenprimary.org.

Those wishing to respond to the consultation should write to the Governors at the school address or email andrea@edenprimary.org.uk

Saucy Sandwich Snaps – healthy eating competition

Exposure, north London’s award winning youth communications charity, is proud to announce an appetising partnership with Haringey Youth Council (with support from Haringey Council) to promote Saucy Sandwich Snaps, a tasty campaign and competition that encourages young people to eat more healthily.

Young people from Haringey Schools and youth groups are invited to participate in the competition, which can be entered as a whole class, small group or individual. The competition involves creating a healthy appetising sandwich, which is photographed and submitted to Exposure along with how the key ingredients contribute to a healthy diet. Information and instructions on how to take part can be found here (external link). The closing date for entries is Friday 6 December 2018.

The concept was created at the #FixUp_LookSharp event hosted earlier this year, where young people were able to come up with creative ideas to tackle teen obesity in the borough. Saucy Sandwich Snaps was the winning idea, and is a great initiative to get young people thinking about what makes a healthy balanced diet.

Exposure will be contacting schools and youth groups to encourage young people to participate.

Details of year 4 multiplication tables check

The Department for Education (DfE) has released further information (external link) about a new online times tables assessment for year 4 pupils.

The assessment, which will be compulsory from 2020, will check whether pupils are able to “recall the multiplication tables up to and including 12 × 12”. The aim is to “help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided”. While under no obligation to do so, schools can volunteer to take part in a pilot of this assessment between 10 and 29 June 2019.

While the planning for, and administration of, these tests falls outside of the remit of governors and trustees, governing boards should gain assurances from executive leaders that plans are in place for year 4 pupils to take these assessments in June 2020. Whilst being mindful of putting undue pressure on teachers and leaders, those governing may also want receive the results of these checks as part of their ongoing monitoring of student outcomes.

Updated guidance on mental health and behaviour in schools

Department for Education (DfE) guidance (external link) on mental health and behaviour in schools has been updated with information on how to identify behaviours that may be related to a mental health problem. Also covered are the questions of working with other professionals and external agencies, along with where to find extra support.

Most schools will have pupils who need mental health support. This advice aims to help schools support pupils whose mental health problems have behavioural consequences. It therefore relates to roles and responsibilities surrounding behaviour in particular. The guidance also addresses curriculum design, within the wider issue of creating a ‘whole school approach’ that promotes positive mental wellbeing.

This non-statutory guidance applies to all schools and is aimed at governing boards, as well as school staff working to support children, including teachers, SEND coordinators and designated safeguarding leads. Governing boards in colleges and other post-16 institutions may also find the intervention and support element of this guidance useful.

You should read this advice alongside the non-statutory behaviour and discipline in schools guidance (external link), which also reflects recent developments in other related policy areas, including alternative provision, exclusions and safeguarding.

Lordship Lane Primary School rewarded for outstanding leadership

Lordship Lane Primary School and headteacher Michelle Randles have been awarded The Prince’s Teaching Institute (PTI) Primary Leadership Programme Mark.

The new Primary School Residential and Leadership Programme aims to build on the PTI’s already successful secondary school model, connecting teachers and headteachers with a network of schools and the opportunity to explore other approaches to school leadership. The focus, as with all the PTI’s activities and courses, is to enhance and enrich the quality of subject teaching.

The school has gained the mark for developing an ethos and culture of high aspiration for pupils and providing effective professional development for primary schools teachers and headteachers.

Each school involved undertakes an action-based research project that will be of benefit to all participating schools. Lordship Lane’s project is about developing the teaching of reading in order to enable children to make rapid progress throughout their primary years.

Michelle commented,

“We are delighted to be awarded the Primary Leadership Programme Mark for our research work, and will be proud to carry the Mark on our stationery and website as evidence of our commitment to inspirational teaching and improving the life chances of the children in our care.”
