Free youth mental health first aid training for schools

The Mayor of London has launched a programme to ensure that by 2021 every school in London has at least one Youth Mental Health First Aider.

The free two-day youth mental health first aid (MHFA) course for schools provides the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. More information is included in the Youth MHFA leaflet.

The training will be delivered in Haringey on:

  • Friday 7 June and Friday 14 June
  • Monday 17 June and Tuesday 18 June
  • Thursday 20 June and Friday 21 June
  • Thursday 26 September and Thursday 3 October

All training will be held at Hornsey School for Girls from 9am to 5pm. The course will be delivered by trained staff from Haringey Council and Whittington Health NHS Trust and is suitable for primary and secondary school staff working with 8-18 year olds.

To book, please email healthy.schools@haringey.gov.uk stating your date preference, name, role, school and email address. Each school is guaranteed one place on the course, and additional places may be offered depending on availability.

Watch an Active Mile in action and win a visit from Sir Mo Farah

Active Miles are 15-minute initiatives that encourage children to get outside and walk, jog or run around a mile regularly, in the playground, around school buildings, or at a nearby park. Research on The Daily Mile, a popular example of an Active Mile, tells us that doing one reduces body fat, and schools report that it increases concentration and may even raise attainment.

Two Haringey schools are offering opportunities for you to come and see it in action:

  • Bounds Green Primary (Wednesday 8 May 09:00) and
  • Lordship Lane Primary (Thursday 16 May 09:15).
  • Please email Healthy.Schools@haringey.gov.uk if you would like to attend.

The Daily Mile is running a competition for one school to win a visit from Sir Mo Farah! If you are currently running  or  starting to run The Daily Mile, sign-up to the website, and return the short questionnaire by 31 May.

Former Devonshire Hill pupil stars on Child Genius

A former pupil of The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary school was a quarter finalist in series 6 of the reality TV show ‘Child Genius’, broadcast on Channel 4 in March.

We are extremely proud of Connor, who reached the quarter finals whilst becoming a favourite of viewers for being a ‘genuinely lovely’ young boy from a ‘working class’ background.  Connor is a very bright child and was a pleasure to teach whilst at our school.  We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

Julie D’Abreu

Headteacher

The show’s producers are now inviting applications for series 7 from parents of ‘high achieving’ 8-12 year olds – for enquiries contact: child.genius@walltowall.co.uk.

Would your school like to take part in a photoshoot?

The council holds a collection of photographs of children in Haringey schools, used in the Primary and Secondary School Admissions Online Booklets and in other official publications across the council.

The current photographs we hold on record are two years old now, and the permission to use them in council publications has now expired.

We are looking for volunteer schools who are willing and able to accommodate us for half a day with a photographer – please let us know by Wednesday 8 May if your school would be happy to take part.

We require one primary school (with a nursery attached) and one secondary school, with the shoot to be arranged at a mutually convenient time.

Please contact heather.kinnersley@haringey.gov.uk if you are interested in taking part.

Corporate Health and Safety – team changes and procedures

There have been some changes in the Corporate Health and Safety Team. Ian Hardwick, H&S Adviser, has left the council to work closer to home and Christine Duckett, Interim H&S Officer, finished her contract. We wish them both well in the future.

Mark Riordan, Interim H&S Adviser (020 8489 1050 Mark.Riordan@haringey.gov.uk), will cover the Adviser’s post. Marie Jeng-Kanu, H&S Officer (020 8489 4520, Marie.Jeng-Kanu@haringey.gov.uk), is back in the team and, to complete the team, Isaiah Chikwendu is the other H&S Adviser (020 8489 3368, Isaiah.Chikwendu@haringey.gov.uk).

Please send general queries and incident forms to: health.safetyadvice@haringey.gov.uk.

I would also like to use this opportunity to let you know that the Lone Working Procedure and the H&S Notice Board Procedure were approved in the last Corporate Health, Safety and Wellbeing Board. They are available in the Communication’s part of the Traded Services Website/Health and Safety for Schools module.

Alexis Correa

Deputy Head of Service – Health and Safety.

Buzzing book award winners

Congratulations to Jane Elson and Steve Tasane who are this year’s winners of the Biblio-Buzz Alexandra Palace Children’s Book Award (formerly Haringey Children’s Book Award).

Voted for by schoolchildren across Haringey, Jane’s novel ‘Will You Catch Me?’ received the Schools Award, while Steve’s book ‘Child I’ received the Library Award, voted for by children visiting Haringey’s libraries.

Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust’s Creative Learning team and Haringey Library Services collaborated to deliver the award aimed at nine to 12-year olds, inspiring them to read and vote for their favourite book.

The winners were announced at a ceremony at the restored Alexandra Palace Theatre, hosted by Michael Rosen – one of Britain’s best-loved writers and performance poets.

School Travel Plans – STARS

The most important items are the Hands Up Survey and Issues. https://stars.tfl.gov.uk/

We cannot help you unless you tell us what is happening and of course, how you are working with your families to improve the issues you raise. The number of cars on the school run is not sustainable and causes the pollution levels that are detrimental to our children’s health and development.

Contact Wendy.thorogood@haringey.gov.uk for an appointment to update your travel plan.

Reach for the STARS – GOLD?

The deadline for the accreditation for STARS is 15 July.  Please upload your activities as you go along, don’t wait until the last day. We are available to visit you in school or assist via email. Contact me now with a date to meet to progress your STARS update.
