Reception/Junior and Secondary Admissions 2019 – important reminder

Secondary Transfer 2020

School Timetable for Admission 2019-2020
The application deadline is 31 October 2019 and the offer day will be 02 March 2020.
The online application process for children starting school in September 2020 opened on 1 September 2019. The number of parents choosing to apply online is rising every year as is the number of Haringey residents who have access to the internet.
Please help us by offering IT facilities at your school and promoting online applications. A member of the admissions team will be happy to attend your Reception or Secondary Transfer meetings to talk to parents about the application process. Please contact Lynne Tighe or Marion Smylie if you haven’t already done so – we are available to attend both morning and evening meetings.
Please note we will NOT be delivering printed booklets to schools this year. Parents will be able to view our digital viewbook online and asked to apply via e-admissions website (external link). The Secondary admissions viewbook also includes information on the secondary school open events which are also available on our website (external link).
Please can you remind parents/carers with children in your year 6 and any subsequent new starters to apply on time before the application deadline date. We have a small number of families every year who forget to make a secondary application, any late applications will not be considered until all on time offers have been made. With your help and support in publicising these deadlines and the imperative of making an on-time application we can minimise the number of families who don’t secure a school place at one of their preferred schools.

Offers

We will send you a list of offers made for children in your year 6 on 02 March 2020.
For any queries on any of the above, please contact Marion Smylie in the Schools Admission Service: Marion.smylie2@haringey.gov.uk

Get creative! Enter our CSP logo competition

Kids – we need you! The council, police, fire brigade and lots of other organisations all work hard to keep where you live safe. This team is called the Haringey Community Safety Partnership. We know this sounds a bit official, so we’re looking for you to design us a logo to bring this to life.
There aren’t many rules – it just needs to include the letters CSP or the words Community Safety Partnership somewhere. Other than that, use your imagination!
The logo will be used on posters, on the internet and on social media any time this partnership wants to tell people about the good work we are doing.
The partnership wants Haringey to be – and feel like – a safe place for people to live, work and visit.
Design your logo and email it to us at events@haringey.gov.uk
Parents – you can also share your kids’ ideas with us on social media, using #IAmHaringey
Send your ideas in by the end of 21 October and we will show off some of the best on social media and maybe even in the news.  So, get your ideas over to us now, and help us tell everyone about what we’re doing to help keep Haringey safe.
A message to young people from Cllr Mark Blake, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Equalities, and Borough Commander DCS Treena Fleming:

“We are here to make you feel safe and we want everybody in Haringey to know about the work we are doing. Kids – we really need your help, ideas and your creativity. We can’t wait to see all the great entries we get for the new Community Safety Partnership logo.”

'Learn More! Do More! Be More!' with Tottenham University

On Friday 20 September the newly refurbished lecture theatre of Haringey Sixth Form College was packed with over 160 bright-eyed primary school students ready to ‘enrol’ into Tottenham University’s (TU) 2019/20 cohort. Joining them were their teachers and a few parents/carers.
Year 4 and 5 pupils from the following schools were there:

The event opened with an energetic welcome from Principal & CEO of Haringey Sixth Form College, Russ Lawrance and was followed with speech by Dalwardin Babu OBE, Community Development Officer/Tottenham University Coordinator and James Lane, Headteacher at St Francis’ de Sale Primary School.
James ended his speech with the following inspirational message:

“There’s no reason you can’t be a Prime Minister in the future. So, my challenge to you, as primary school students in Tottenham, is to remember one thing – Learn more! Do more! Be more! Write that in your new journals and always reflect on it!”

Graduates from previous Tottenham University cohorts were given the chance to share their experiences on the project, where one student mentioned:

“My time at Tottenham University last year was great because I went to Oxford University and I also went to the Houses of Parliament. Because of these trips, I know that one day I can also go to university and I can also work at The Houses of Parliament.”

Guest of Honour, Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheila Peacock gave an encouraging speech which reflected on her time as a young student who grew up in Tottenham and also studied there too, at the site which was once known as Middlesex University (Tottenham Campus), now Haringey Sixth Form College. She then individually handed the new TU journals (which were sponsored by Haringey Sixth Form College) to every student and shook their hands to welcome them on board.
In the words of James Lane, Headteacher of St Francis’ de Sales Primary School “Learn more! Do more! Be more!” And this is exactly the message that the TU project and its participants have portrayed over the last three years, and will continue to do so.

October is International Walking Month

A timely reminder to encourage all your new families to walk, not drive to the school. Please remember to collect the Hands Up Survey from all of your classes. Use this sheet or log onto STARS to open the survey and create a link to send to all tutors. If you can all do this now, we can complete our School Street Survey before the end of the year.

  •  Hari bear could be hiding in your school key stage one class somewhere (we lost two of our special Hari bears last year – is he with you?)
  • Contact Wendy Thorogood for the resources that cost nothing to get your key stage one pupils excited and moving, as well as reducing cars at the gate.
  • Contact Wendy to organise Orienteering in a park near your school, this would be a fun extra walking activity to get all the class out for an Autumn Activity.

Accreditations

You will soon be receiving an email with the Accreditation Stars that you have earned. These should be added to your school website, used in emails and letters, just like the Healthy Schools accreditation

Training

We want to hold training sessions with you and your new Junior Travel Ambassadors (JTA).  Please use this presentation and application forms to recruit your new team members.
We can come and present their JTA badges and help with their first assembly plan – this should be based on Be Bright and Be Seen.

Vision Zero

The Mayor of London and TfL have an ambitious plan to have Zero traffic related issues by 2040.
We have put together a great bundle of resources, please contact Halema.uddin@haringey.gov.uk to receive them. Let her know what your plans are to improve Road Safety awareness in your school.

Safe Drive Stay Alive 2020

Important message to every educational provider for students aged 16 and over.  We are proud to say we are supporting Safe Drive Stay Alive again so hold the date. The events will be held at The Bernie Grant Arts Centre on 16, 17 and 18 March 2020. Send your applications in as soon as possible. There are limited spaces, so book now to avoid disappointment.

STARS Training Sessions

If your accreditation is expiring this year or your school did not get accredited last year, don’t worry! We will be holding training sessions throughout the year, but the earlier you get involved, the higher your accreditation.
Walk Zones and School Streets are the hot topics. So, if you don’t have a walk zone and want one, email me to book a training session. The minimum requirement is that you have completed a Whole School Hands UP survey and it is on STARS.
School Streets will not be considered at your school unless you have at least completed Bronze level activities on STARS for this year. We will help you every step of the way.

Cycling

Continue to use Cycle Confident to book your students cycle skills lessons for bikeability and beyond. Ask about the Adult cycling sessions too.

Bike Markets and Try Before you Bike

We have commissioned Peddle My Wheels to operate bike markets in our borough. Bring along your unloved/outgrown bike and if they can make it road worthy, they will and offer it for sale at a bike market – you receive the proceeds. Their website has dates of all bike markets available.
The same company facilitate our residents to try out a bike and pay monthly on a rent to buy scheme. Check their website to see how this extremely easy scheme works.

Cycle to Work Scheme

Contact us for the link to this fantastic in house scheme for staff who are paid by Haringey.

Spurs' Oliver Skipp is top of the class

Ferry Lane Primary School received a surprise visit from young Spurs player, Oliver Skipp, who joined them for a maths lesson and a kickabout.
Oliver visited Ferry Lane Primary School as part of the Premier League Primary Stars campaign, which encourages children aged 5 to 11 to learn with help from their favourite Premier League clubs and players.
It was Oliver’s 19th birthday and he was greeted eagerly by the Year 4 class, who sang Happy Birthday and presented him with a cake and handmade birthday cards. Oliver and a group of Spurs coaches then joined the class to help them solve some Premier League Primary Stars maths challenges and after the sums were done, everyone went to the playground for a football skills session.
Oliver was keen to emphasise the importance of education, having just studied for and completed two A-Levels alongside his football training. He said:

“It’s not that usual for footballers to keep studying, but in my Spurs age group there were quite a few of us and we all pushed each other.”

The birthday boy was impressed by the pupils’ enthusiasm in both the maths class and the football training and he had a message for children in school. Oliver advised:

“Always make sure you do the best that you can do, no matter what anyone else does. Hard work is fundamental and staying humble and grounded is key. Keep working hard and good things will be around the corner.”

Lisa Rawashdeh, Head Teacher at Ferry Lane Primary School said:

“It’s been fantastic welcoming Oliver Skipp to our school today. The children have loved having the opportunity to ask him questions about his life as a professional footballer and how he balances his studying with his playing commitments. We are delighted to be working with Tottenham Hotspur Foundation this academic year and I know both children and teachers will find their sessions invaluable.”
