Free for 2s videos – your feedback is needed!

Haringey has produced videos promoting our Free for 2s campaign in several languages. Watch the videos to see what a typical learning and fun day is like for a two-year-old.
Haringey was awarded an early years grant from The Mayor of London for our innovative Volunteer Peer Networkers Project, which encourages dads from Turkish, Kurdish and Somali communities to raise awareness of and take up in the free early learning offer for two-year-olds. Data has shown that children from these communities could be faring better in their early years.
The videos are designed to support outreach and administrative staff to overcome language barriers and for parents – particularly dads, to see for themselves what early learning looks like.
We would very much appreciate feedback on the video for reporting purposes. We are particularly keen to learn whether the video is helping those registered to offer FF2 places to communicate with parents and whether parents/dads have been encouraged to apply as a result of watching the video?
Please can you send any feedback you may have to: Serife (Sherry) Ibrahim serife.ibrahim@haringey.gov.uk

Ferry Lane Primary School visit from Spurs stars

A class from Ferry Lane Primary School had a unique lesson in black history, as part of a special Black History Month workshop with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. They joined current Spurs players Kyle Walker-Peters and Becky Spencer and Club Ambassador Ledley King in learning about famous black figures in the history of football and in Haringey.

The event was educational for the players too, who were enthusiastic about the opportunity to take part and learn alongside the children. It was particularly special for right back Kyle Walker-Peters, who grew up in Tottenham’s Broadwater Farm.  Kyle said:

“I remember Black History Month in secondary school and learning about people like Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. It was always important for me, because after that month we didn’t hear much about it. There should be more all year around.”

In what was Hate Crime Awareness Week, Kyle had some thoughts on combatting racism within football. He said:

“It’s mainly about educating fans. Racism between players has died down a lot. Kick It Out and other recent campaigns have helped, but it’s still a big problem with fans – not everyone is willing to change.”

The sentiment was shared by former club captain and England international, Ledley King, who said:

“We have to educate people – it’s important to do it from a young age, not in later years. If we teach people from an early age not to judge people by the colour of their skin, hopefully we’ll be living in a better world.”

Project SEARCH: supporting young people with learning disabilities into employment

Eleven young people with learning disabilities will get support with finding employment, following a partnership between Haringey Council, North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, CONEL and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.
The partnership is run with Project SEARCH, a charity that works with organisations in the UK to help people with learning disabilities find work. Project SEARCH will provide the young people with year-long supported internships at North Middlesex Hospital which they will complete alongside on-site academic studies.
The interns will work in various departments in the hospital, developing their confidence and communication. They will also receive practical work-based training and be taught English, maths and employability skills for an hour every day. At the end of the academic year, the group will have an opportunity to apply for jobs at the hospital.
People with learning disabilities face significant barriers to securing paid employment and finding sustainable careers. According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics, only 7% of people with a learning disability are currently in paid employment; however, this figure increases to 65% for those who have completed Project SEARCH programmes.
Haringey is referring young people to the programme and also developing opportunities to assist students after they have completed the internships.

School Streets – Travel Plans and Parking Permits

We know this is high on the agenda for a lot of our schools. We need you all to complete your Hands Up survey on this site too, please take a look and if you need support that contact me smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk
The assessment of each school in the borough is about to commence. An independent company will be visiting each primary school over the coming months. They will be assessing the parking situation and the general geography and signs and lines for each school, in line with our criteria. This will help us prioritise school street projects to where they will make a good impact and improve the health and wellbeing of both pupils and residents. Only schools that are active on STARS will be considered for the school street project. Don’t feel left out, anyone can do this, it is a free service and we support you. Please check to see who your School Travel Plan Coordinator is. They can help with and travel issues you think need to be looked at. Check out TfL Stars to see the accreditation status of your school.
If you have any comments to make about your school, please send them to Wendy Thorogood at smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk and add them as an issue on TfL STARS.
