Urgent – No Barriers UEFA Euros 2021 opportunity for primary schools!

Dear Teachers

We are getting in touch offering your school a once in a lifetime opportunity as part of No Barriers, a project that uses the power of football to champion inclusion in your school.

We are looking for one student from your school, aged 6-10, to represent their borough at the UEFA EUROs and walk onto the pitch at Wembley Stadium with a team playing in UEFA EUROs. Students from each London borough will be selected to attend the games, which makes this an exclusive and brilliant opportunity for your school.

In order to qualify, your school must sign up through the No Barriers webform which can be found here: https://www.big-ideas.org/nobarriers/ by Thursday 20th May.

As part of that form you must submit a ‘No Barriers Commitment’ from your school, committing to breaking down barriers to inclusion through sport. Your ‘No Barriers Commitment’ could include:

  • Why is it important for everyone in your school to overcome the barriers they face?
  • What can football do to inspire your pupils to overcome barriers?
  • What can the UEFA EUROs do to inspire your pupils to overcome barriers?
  • How do pupils in your school overcome the barriers they face?
  • Tell us how your school can overcome barriers to give everyone the best shot at goal?

Places are limited and first come, first serve, so get in touch ASAP to ensure your place.

T&Cs

Schools will be selected with the aim that every borough of London is represented. When more than one school applies from a borough, schools that submit the most inspiring messages with a commitment to take part in the project will be selected. Everyone will be kept on a waiting list for further opportunities.

If your school has been selected for this opportunity, Big Ideas will contact you to confirm the details of your nominated student and to obtain consent from a parent or guardian.

All schools who register will be invited to take part in the No Barriers programme.

Feel free to contact Hollie with any questions on 07467 946897.

Best wishes,

The No Barriers team

Haringey Children’s Services – letter from Ofsted

Haringey Children’s Services recently had a ‘focused visit’ from Ofsted – essentially a mini inspection. The letter setting out its findings has now been published on the Ofsted website. Although the letter of course identifies some areas for improvement, there are lots of positive comments. Here are just some:

  • “A determined and collaborative effort by the multi-agency partnership has identified and supported the most vulnerable children.”
  • “Partnerships in Haringey have strengthened further through working together more closely. This has hastened positive change and created a culture focused on overcoming shared obstacles.”
  • “The multi-agency safeguarding hub (MASH) makes effective decisions to safeguard children. Children and families receive a timely and appropriate response that is proportionate to their level of need.”
  • “Staff are positive about working in Haringey and have valued the exceptional support provided by managers at all levels during the pandemic.”

Spurs promote food banks offering free food to families in May half term

TFB May Flyer 2021

Legendary former midfielder and Tottenham Hotspur Ambassador Ossie Ardiles joined fans and volunteers as they delivered thousands of flyers  promoting organisations offering free food to residents in N15, N17 and N22.

Foodbanks provide emergency food and support to people living in poverty – currently more than 14 million people in the UK – including 4.5 million children.

To help avoid holiday hunger during May half term, Tottenham Foodbank has created food support flyers, featuring 20 organisations offering free food to local residents in need. TFB May Flyer 2021

Ossie spent the morning talking to volunteers and thanking them for their support, as well as having socially distanced photos.

In January 2021, the club launched a fundraising initiative to support North Enfield and Tottenham Foodbanks. The club and its fans are long-term supporters of the Foodbanks, assisting local people living in crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic demand for foodbanks has risen by approximately 300%.

Ossie said:

“After what has been an incredibly challenging year, it was a privilege to join volunteers today and help distribute flyers within the community. Tottenham Foodbank does an absolutely incredible job in supporting people and it’s vital we continue to raise as much awareness and funds as possible to ensure their great work continues.”

Launching the Primary Spring Stride 2021

As we all know, it is important to encourage children to participate in regular physical activity to promote good physical and mental wellbeing. The benefits of exercise can also be seen in the classroom with improved concentration and memory function. However, we have heard from many of our schools that children’s weight and physical fitness have been impacted by lockdown.

This is why we are launching The Spring Stride! The Spring Stride is a brand-new physical activity competition between primary schools in Haringey. It will take place from Tuesday 4 to Friday 28 May and all primary schools have had the opportunity to sign up. Participating primary schools are competing to do 25 days of physical activity. Daily physical activity could be The Daily Mile, sports, games, or classroom-based exercise.

During the competition, schools can get additional support from local partners. This includes:

  • Half-day sports session for pupils – The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Primary Stars team are offering free half-day sessions of football-based fun during the competition period. Please be aware that sessions were offered on a first-come-first-served basis and have now all been allocated.
  • Workshops for parents – One You Haringey are providing virtual workshops for all parents of children participating in The Spring Stride. Three 1 hour-long workshops will take place over the competition period. The sessions will cover cardiovascular activity, resistance activity and behaviour change.
  • Fitt-in access – Fitt-in are offering all participating schools a free trial of the Fitt-in platform for the competition period. Fitt-in offers online exercise videos for classroom-based physical activity. An annual subscription for a school usually costs £500. In addition, Fitt-in will send a couple of their instructors, whom you see on the videos, to the most active Fitt-in Haringey primary school to provide a live Fitt-in class.

Prizes are:

  • 1st place – £500 Amazon voucher and a Tottenham Takeover Day including special Spurs guests (provided by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation)
  • 2nd place – £250 Amazon voucher and support from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation at your school sports day
  • 3rd place – £250 Amazon voucher

The formal deadline to sign up for the competition was Thursday 29 April, but if you are keen to sign up then please get in touch with healthy.schools@haringey.gov.uk as soon as possible.
