Two Haringey schools were awarded Top School Awards by Transport for London for their brilliant work delivering life skills to their pupils.
Woodside Nursery, N22
Won top school award for Excellence in Cycling plus Silver School Travel Accreditation for their programme of encouraging children to learn to ride on two wheels through balanceablity training, culminating in a whole school Bikeathon challenge in their local park. They are proud that 99% move up to reception as independent cyclists on 2 wheels.
Gladesmore Secondary School
Won Top School Award for Excellence in Road Safety plus Gold travel plan accreditation.Gladesmore has taken part in the TfL run Youth Travel Ambassador scheme for 2 years, where a group of students creates a scheme to improve issues identified by the students. This has included road safety awareness activities and assemblies and poster competitions. This year after successfully pitching for £250 from TfL they created a Distraction Obstacle course.
Moving Up – Transition Competition Winner
Every year 6 child in Haringey was given a copy of Moving Up magazine in May. This gives information to help them to be safer traveling – especially when they move up to secondary school. Students aged 11 – 16 years are the most vulnerable age for being involved road traffic incidents. They also receive their new Zip Oyster Card and to help them understand that planning a journey is a good way to reduce risk of putting themselves in danger by getting lost, or late or confused, we offer a competition for them.
They have to work out how to travel around 5 points from Haringey to iconic London landmarks and then to their new secondary school. This demonstrates an understanding of the public transport route planning tools available online
We received more than 300 entries this year and the standards were extremely high. The top 6 entries for accuracy were from Earlham Primary School. The outright winner was Julia who has now moved up to Woodside High.
On Friday 15 December Cllr Mitchell presented Julia with her prize of a lovely new bike with safety equipment. Julia and her parents were very excited by her achievements. She was a well-deserved winner who was surprised and happy to be able to cycle again. Julia also said that her mum now uses the online planning tools for safer journeys too.
STARS school travel planning 1:1 training sessions
School travel plans are a great tool if you want to improve pupil attendance, fitness and have a school walk zone map, or if you have issues about travel around your school, including parking on your keep clear lines, you need to be registered on STARS (external link)

Celebrations, Awards and Training at the PDC 7, 8, 9 February 2018
We are planning 3 events at the PDC. We will be awarding the STARS certificates and STARS from 2016-17, showcasing resources and running workshops. Bring up to 4 pupils with you to take part in fun learning activities.

Thursday 8 February – 2 sessions 9:30 and 1pm – Primary
Friday 9 February – Secondary.
