Consultation on school admission arrangements 2023-24

We want to know what you think about our proposed admission arrangements for community and voluntary controlled primary and secondary schools for the academic year 2023-24.

In accordance with the School Admissions Code (2021), admission authorities are required to consult on any proposed change to the admission arrangements.

Haringey council is the admission authority for all Haringey community and voluntary controlled schools. The council is consulting on the proposed admission arrangements for entry to school in the academic year 2023-24 for Haringey’s community and voluntary controlled nursery, infant , junior, primary and secondary settings.

This consultation will run from 26 November 2021 and 7 January 2022 inclusive.

Why are we consulting?

We consult on our admission arrangements annually irrespective of whether or not there is a proposed change to the arrangements. This is to ensure transparency and openness on the contents of our arrangements and to allow parents, carers and other stakeholders who might not previously have been interested in admission arrangements (perhaps because they didn’t have a child of school age) to make a representation that can then be considered as part of the determination of the arrangements.

This year we are not proposing a change to the oversubscription criteria for community and voluntary controlled schools.

Proposed In-Year Fair Access Protocol

We are also consulting on the proposed In-Year Fair Access Protocol (IYFAP) which all schools and academies in Haringey must follow. An In-Year Fair Access Protocol (IYFAP) has been agreed in Haringey to ensure unplaced children, especially the most vulnerable, are offered a school place without delay and is a statutory requirement set out in the School Admissions Code 2021.

In using the Protocol, it ensures that these children and young people are shared fairly across all Haringey schools and that this process is open and transparent. Haringey’s Protocol is consulted on annually and para 3 of the Protocol in Appendix 5 sets out that “it is essential to the success of IYFAP that all Headteachers and governing bodies agree to the aims, principles and procedures and give their fullest support.”

Primary school admissions for September 2022

Primary Schools only

The application deadline is 15 January 2022 and National offer day will be 19 April 2022.

Please can you remind parents/carers with children in your nursery (where applicable) to apply on time and also to alert families with children already on roll who have younger siblings.

We have a small number of families every year who forget to make a reception application for their second or subsequent child or a Junior transfer application for their infant school child. With your help and support in publicising these deadlines and the imperative of making an on-time application we can minimise the number of families who don’t secure a school place at one of their preferred schools.

Haringey is also arranging some more online talks about applying for a Reception place. Delivered via Microsoft Teams or Zoom, these also offer an opportunity for Q&A sessions after the presentation.  See separate news item. Dates will be available on our website and the promotion leaflet will been sent to all primary schools.

Preferences

We will let you know how many reception preferences you have received (including from those applicants resident outside Haringey) on 9 February 2022. If you would like to know how many applicants have applied online (not on paper) you can find this out now by logging on to the online admissions system (external link)

On 9 February 2022, we will also send you a list to verify sibling applications (community and voluntary controlled schools only) or send you a full list of applicants to rank in the order of your admissions criteria (academies and voluntary aided schools only). It is very important that you return these lists by no later than 18 February 2022 to ensure that we are able to meet our PAN London deadlines.

Offers

We will send you a final offer list before 19 April 2022. After offer day we will continue to send you updated lists as places are declined and new offers are made.

For any queries on any of the above, please contact Lynne Tighe, Lynne.Tighe@haringey.gov.uk (Reception) or Imogen Rush, Imogen.Rush@haringey.gov.uk (Junior).
