Peter Desmond, Haringey’s Head of Music & Performing Arts, is retiring this year, bringing down the curtain on a 35-year association with the borough’s cultural scene.
Having moved to London in the mid 1980s, Peter took up Head of Music posts at White Hart Lane School and St Thomas More RC School before opting for a part-time role with the local authority – while continuing at St Thomas More – in 2000.
Peter made swift progress, being appointed the Head of Service within two years and he has “had a ball ever since.” Peter says:
“It has been a real privilege to give my energies to encouraging young people, working in music which is my passion and striving to give access to the wonderful opportunities we offer to young people from across the diversity of backgrounds represented in Haringey. The highlights have been the big concerts, the cultural exchanges with groups from around the world and just seeing people grow in their musicianship and confidence, including the many wonderful teachers I have worked with. I wish them all every success for the future and thank them for all the happy memories which I treasure. I would encourage young musicians to make the most of their talent; share the joy they have in making music; seize every opportunity that comes their way and to seek to encourage others.”
One of Peter’s colleagues at the council, Catty Alberman, hails him as an “extraordinary man and musician” whose “many achievements are the stuff of legend.”
“His inspirational vision, unstoppable optimism and unremitting passion have benefited thousands of local children and young people for the last 35 years. His ‘can do’ approach and commitment to providing opportunities for youngsters, regardless of financial or social circumstances, has left a deep impact and will be remembered by many for years to come. No obstacle has proved too great. Peter’s endeavours as a musician, team leader and educator surpass what anyone could ever expect of one man. His well-deserved retirement will leave an enormous void, but an amazing legacy for Haringey Young Musicians and all of us who have been lucky enough to work with him.”
