The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has honoured the exceptional performance of The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School. He invited the school to the Schools for Success awards ceremony on 5 October at City Hall to celebrate its achievements in supporting pupils needing extra help to fulfil their potential. Joanne McCartney, the Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare, hosted the ceremony.
The Mayor’s programme aims to improve expectations and raise standards for London’s schoolchildren, regardless of their background. Now in its second year, Schools for Success has created a network through which schools can share experiences and best practice with others across London. He invited more than 100 eligible schools to join the programme and every local authority in London now has a school it can look to as an example. This group, refreshed annually, represents approximately 6% of London’s schools.
The Schools for Success programme has recognised The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School as one of the top 2% of schools in England and the top 6% in London in terms of progress, meaning that pupils at the school make significant progress. Owing to the exceptional teaching, high expectations of all staff and commitment from families to work with the school to ensure that their children excel, The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School has a progress measure that means pupils can transfer to secondary school confidently, with academic security and with very high aspirations for personal success.
Julie D’Abreu, Executive Headteacher, says:
“I'm incredibly proud of the staff and children at The Devonshire Hill Nursery & Primary School for having such high aspirations to do incredibly well, and they have. The teachers have shown such tremendous commitment in supporting our children to achieve over and above what they thought possible. We have raised standards for all our children regardless of their backgrounds, and we expect all of our children to aspire to reach and exceed their full potential. We are, as our motto says, Successful Learners!”
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, says:
“I’d like to congratulate The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School for the fantastic work of their staff and pupils in the last year.”
Other Haringey Schools which are participating in Schools for Success are South Harringay School, Belmont Junior School and Trinity Primary Academy.
Of the schools recognised this year, more than one-third are participating for the second year running. All participating schools are encouraged to share their expertise with others through seminars and visits, so that their success can be replicated across London.
One hundred percent of Haringey’s schools are rated as Good or Outstanding by Ofsted. Overall, 92% of London’s schools are rated as Good or Outstanding, the highest of any region in the country. Find out more about the Schools for Success programme here (external link).
