Parent Champions needed
Haringey parents of children under five are invited to sign up to become a Parent Champion. Parent Champions are volunteers who give up some of their spare time to support other parents like themselves. They provide information about accessing free childcare for under fives, encourage families to access local services, whilst enhancing their own skills and personal development with an accredited course.
Training for these roles begins on Tuesday 4 February 2020 for six weeks. For more details or to sign up, please contact Natasha Miller – Parent Champion Coordinator, by 26 January 2020 on 020 8489 5349 or email Natasha.Miller@haringey.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can speak to staff at your local children’s centre.
We are pleased to announce that from 1 April 2020 there will be new electricity and gas contracts in place for schools’ gas through Haringey Council’s corporate contract with LASER (a public sector energy buying group owned by Kent County Council). The new supplier for electricity will be npower and the gas supplier will remain Corona.
We have listened to schools’ needs, including environmental and social considerations, reducing complexity in terms of number of suppliers and supplier performance. The new contracts include:
Value for money
- contract procured at scale across London boroughs and other public sector organisations
- a risk-managed approach to purchasing energy that reduces the impact of sudden price changes in the market
- budget tool to make budget management and forecasting easier
- reduced buying organisation fees.
Environmental and social benefits
- 100% Renewable Energy Guarantee Origin (REGO) sourced electricity
- suppliers paying the London Living Wage.
Improved supplier performance
- KPIs for supplier performance, including query management and invoicing
- No disconnection prior to mediation
- access to additional services including energy efficiency and renewable energy installation.
These contracts have been procured though a framework run by LASER and the OJEU compliant procurement was run by the London Energy Project (a collaborative Category Management resource led by Haringey Council) on behalf of London and South East local authorities and other public sector organisations. The current CCS framework contracts with EDF, British Gas and Corona will cease on 31 March 2020.
What do I need to do to join if I’m already on Haringey’s contracts for electricity and gas?
If your school is currently on Haringey’s contracts through the CCS framework, you don’t need to do anything to sign up and your school will automatically transfer to the LEP/LASER framework on 1 April 2020.
However, your current supplier(s) may object to the transfer if there is any debt on your accounts. It is therefore essential to resolve any outstanding balances with your current suppliers by 31 March 2020 to enable a smooth transfer to the new contract. If these are not cleared by 31 March 2020, you may move to more expensive out of contract rates on 1 April 2020 and remain on these rates until any outstanding invoices are cleared, and you can move to the new framework. Therefore, please take the time now to check your account balances with your current suppliers, pay any outstanding invoices and/or provide remittance advice for invoices that have been paid but not allocated.
If you need any assistance in resolving outstanding balances with your suppliers, please contact energy@haringey.gov.uk and we will be happy to assist.
What do I need to do to join if I’m not on Haringey’s contracts for electricity and gas?
If you are interested in joining the contract, please contact energy@haringey.gov.uk
The Energy Management team will be attending a bursars’ meeting soon and will continue to be in touch regarding the changes over the forthcoming months. And of course, if you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch at energy@haringey.gov.uk.
New water contract with Wave
We are pleased to announce that schools can now join a new contract for water, wastewater and ancillary services with Anglian Water for Business, trading as Wave. Following the deregulation of the non-domestic water market in 2017, Haringey Council has entered into a corporate contract with Wave which schools are eligible to join.
The new Wave contract includes several benefits including:
- Value for money – contract procured at scale across London boroughs and other public sector organisations
- An educational pack for your school about water efficiency
- An online supplier portal to access and download invoices, raise queries and monitor usage
- KPIs for supplier performance including query management and invoicing.
Wave can also help your school save money on your water bills through several value added services including:
- A Water Footprint Assessment to help you understand your consumption
- Access to water efficiency measures and services including water audit surveys, leak detection and automatic meters.
The Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) compliant procurement was led by the London Energy Project (a collaborative Category Management resource led by Haringey Council) on behalf of London and South East local authorities and other public sector organisations and run by the Crown Commercial Service (CCS – a public sector buying group) though a YPO (Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation) framework.
How can my school join the contract with Wave?
If your school buys its energy through the Haringey corporate contract, you can also join the contract with Wave. Let us know if you are interested in joining by emailing an Expression of Interest to energy@haringey.gov.uk. We will be happy to assist in the registration process.
To note, your current supplier may object to the transfer if there is any debt on your account(s), so it is advisable to resolve any outstanding balances now to enable a smooth transfer to the new contract. Please therefore take the time to check your account balances with your current supplier, pay any outstanding invoices and/or provide remittance advice for invoices that have been paid but not allocated.
What if my school buys energy elsewhere?
At present, the corporate contract with Wave is only available to schools that purchase energy through Haringey’s corporate contract. If you buy your energy elsewhere, your school is free to set up an independent contract with a supplier of your choosing, including Wave, but will be on different contract rates.

The Energy Management team will be attending a bursars’ meeting soon. You can also get in touch anytime on: energy@haringey.gov.uk
In November both the Juniors and Infants at Rokesly schools were involved in the ‘Masked Crusaders’ campaign to tackle car idling and reduce harmful pollution around the school.
Some Rokesly parents worked with London Sustainable Schools and Haringey Council to build a campaign to encourage car users to turn their engines off rather than letting idling engines pollute the air outside the school.
The children used their fun ‘anti-pollution masks’ made out of recycled materials to transform into ‘Masked Crusaders’ against engine idling, along with children in other schools across London.
The story gained great media coverage in the Metro and the Ham and High.

The Corporate Health, Safety and Wellbeing Board met on 12 November and approved the following documents:
- Schools Health and Safety Policy. There are no substantial changes on this policy. Please use this document as a template when you review next your school H&S policy.
- Educational Visits Procedure. The procedure has been reviewed in line with current guidance and the fact that the Council uses the Evolve system to record educational visits. All visits should be recorded on Evolve. Category 3 visits do not require any more express consent from the Chair of Governors, only the Headteacher, who approves the trip via Evolve. The Corporate H&S Team will continue to review and approve category 3 visits. Please ensure your EVC and Head contact details are correct in Evolve and that your EVC is trained. If your EVC requires training, please contact health.safetyadvice@haringey.gov.uk
- Management of Radioactive Substances Procedure. This procedure formalises the processes that your schools should have been following already if you have radioactive sources. Remember that, if you buy into the Health and Safety for Schools SLA, our RPO will carry out a yearly inspection to help you with compliance.
These documents will be uploaded shortly onto the Traded Services Website. These and all other H&S management system documents can be found in the Communication section, then select Article List, select all in the date section, and type a key word e.g. accident, for the accident reporting procedure and form.
If you have any queries, please contact health.safetyadvice@haringey.gov.uk or 020 8489 4589.
Last year the British artist, screenwriter and Oscar winning film director Steve McQueen invited every year 3 class in every primary school in London to have their class photo taken as part of his Year 3 photographic project – one of the most ambitious portraits of citizenship ever undertaken.
Year 3 is considered a milestone year in a child’s development and sense of identity. It’s when children aged 7–8 years old become more conscious of a much bigger world beyond their immediate family.
Haringey schools leapt at the opportunity to get involved, with 54 schools and over 1500 children from the borough taking part.
Now Steve McQueen’s Steve McQueen’s epic Year 3 project can be seen on over 600 billboards across all 33 of London’s boroughs. The billboards feature huge class photos of year 3 school children from London primary schools.
Look out for the billboards – can you see your school featured? The billboards can be spotted on the side of the road, on railway platforms, and at London Underground stations for most of November 2019. To find out where they are located, you can explore the map on the website (external link).
All the school photos will be presented together in a large-scale, free exhibition at Tate Britain from 12 November 2019 – 3 May 2020. Read more on the Tate website (external link).
