Tickets now available for ‘Routes to Work’ careers fair

Hundreds of Haringey students will explore their career and further education options and enjoy first-hand advice from leading employers at the second ‘Routes to Work’ careers fair

The event, held in conjunction with London Stansted Airport and the College of North East London, will take place at Alexandra Palace on 8 November from 3.30pm and is free for all Haringey students.

Parents and students will be able to talk directly to providers and employers to discover the best “route” for their future – whether that’s an apprenticeship, degree, direct employment or another option.

Last year’s event welcomed employers and further education providers such as North Middlesex Hospital, The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Willmott Dixon and Middlesex and Birkbeck Universities and saw more than 1,000 students take up the opportunity to find out more about study and career options after GCSE and A Level.

Students from year 11+ can register for a free ticket (external link)  by 6 October 2017.

Reminder: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) training 19 September

BAFTA Kids at Alexandra Palace – a few places left

BAFTA Kids Big Schools Day takes place at Alexandra Palace on 20 June. Attended by 1,000 local children in years 5 and 6, the event will showcase careers within television production.

Hosted by Ben Shires (Officially Amazing) and Lyndsey Russell (Blue Peter), pupils will use well-known children’s television programmes to go behind the scenes to think about prop making, script writing, animation and character design. BAFTA Award winning composers will use the Palace’s iconic Henry Willis Organ to demonstrate the importance of theme tunes, and how music can be used to heighten tension or change the feel of a scene.

If you are interested in attending this event with a group of pupils, the cost per pupil is £2.50 and there are still a few places left. Contact Isobel Aptaker, learning manager on  020 8365 4578

Schools invited to visit Wood Green Crown Court

Have you considered organising a school trip to Wood Green Crown Court? The team at Wood Green Crown Court is keen to encourage visits by students. This unique educational experience could inspire students to consider a career in law, as well as increasing their awareness of the role of the Justice process in the wider social system.

A range of curriculum opportunities:

  • Visits to support A level Politics students and GCSE Sociology students, with particular reference to the criminology aspect of the syllabus;
  • Visits to support Citizenship students and curriculum links across other areas;
  • Outreach work for students who may be struggling with a negative view of the judiciary, including but not limited to those at risk of making poor lifestyle choices;
  • The opportunity for a Judge to visit a school, followed by the students visiting the Court;
  • Younger pupils can visit the building, meet a Judge and gain a sense of the process.

Educational visits are subject to a few provisos:

  • Children under 13 cannot sit in on actual hearings. The evidence and issues in a trial can be disturbing and a Crown Court hearing is a solemn and serious process where the state puts a defendant on trial.
  • Older children, if appropriately accompanied, will be able to sit in on trials and other formal hearings and have an opportunity to discuss the process with the Judge.
  • Younger children are welcome to visit the Court building and the courtrooms and to meet a Judge.

If you would like further information, or to plan your visit, please contact:

Mrs Zeb Johnson,  Operations Manager at Wood Green Crown Court, HM Courts & Tribunals Service

FFT announce road show for primary schools

Key Stage 2 autumn road shows for head teachers and senior leaders responsible for performance and data in primary schools have been announced by Fischer Family Trust (FFT) Education. Two sessions will be held in London on Friday 29 September.

The replacement of RAISEonline with a slimmed down package called Analyse School Performance (ASP) will bring a new set of challenges for schools and Inspectors. The key changes will be outlined at this autumn’s FFT Roadshows, together with how FFT Aspire can be used in combination with the DfE’s replacement system to ensure that schools can effectively evaluate their performance and measure progress.

Delegates will also get a first look at the latest national performance trends, including an exclusive FFT data report for your school, where they can and find out how their school has performed in the second year of a scaled score world.

The three-hour roadshow, which is open to subscribers and non-subscribers to FFT Aspire, will cover:

• An outline of the key features of the new FFT Aspire and ASP systems.

• A blended approach to self-evaluation – maximising the impact of Aspire and ASP.

• How do you compare?  Early access to an FFT data report for your school.

• Life after levels – understanding national trends one year on. What can we learn from this year’s results?

• Tracking progress – autumn will see the development of a brand new tracking module in Aspire. Be part of our pilot project and see how this new facility can be used effectively alongside Aspire’s target setting and intervention modules.

• FFT research – a look at the latest primary school research from Education Datalab.

The roadshow costs £95 plus vat per delegate.  To book, or for more information, please visit the roadshow website (external link)   or email training@fft.org.uk.
