Disposal of old Moselle school site

Haringey Education Services recently contacted Head Teachers and Chairs of Governors at schools in the local area of the former Moselle school site to let them know about this consultation, which is running between 12 June and Wednesday 26 July.

If you are a Head Teacher or Chair of Governors at a nearby school it is important that you complete this online survey (external link). It will take less than 5 minutes.

Background to the consultation and current status:

  • The site in question is the former Moselle Lower school, Adams Road, Tottenham, London N17 6HW.
  • The school closed in 2011 when Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils relocated to become part of the Brook at the Broadwaters Inclusive Learning Community (BWF ILC) and Key Stage 3 and 4 relocated to Riverside.
  • The building has remained closed since the school vacated and is currently occupied by live in guardians to secure and protect it.
  • The local authority is planning to use the site for alternative, non educational use and needs to declassify the land via the DfE.
  • The site has not previously provided recreational space for any other schools.

There is a growing need for alternative provsion in our borough and I am aware that many pupils receive this provsion out of borough at vast cost. I know that Dawn Ferdinand, HT at The Willow has written to the leader of the council expressing deep concern about the proposal for the land to be used for temporary housing. I agree with her that there is a potential risk of unrest in the area if this goes ahead. She also states the case for using this site for additional alternative provison. We are already seeing a large increase in the number of pupils with complex needs and this is set to continue as many more children now survive premature birth due to medical advancements and technology, where in the past they would not. A borough like Haringey serves the most vulnerable in society and has a much higher proportion of children with additional needs. A robust plan around supporting these children is needed.  Mainstream schools and staff cope admirably in supporting  pupils but resources are becoming extremely overstretched, especially as school funding is diminishing. Temporary housing will generate a need for additional school places and most of the surplus school places currently are not near this site. Joined up thinking around place planning, housing and cohesion is needed here and school leaders, especially those who have been around a while are ideally placed to provide this (glad to be consulted on this matter). Risley however would welcome temporary housing near our site if it generates students as we, like other schools around us have a drop in numbers next year. Predictions for the coming years show a simliar trend.

Many thanks for your comment, Linda. I have passed this on to Eveleen Riordan/ Laura Bridges for them to respond to you.
With kind regards
Heather Kinnersley
