Safe Drive Stay Alive

This is taking place on 16, 17 and 18 March @ The Bernie Grant Arts Centre, N15
Has your school applied for free seats for this road safety production aimed at our students aged 16 and over? This is a powerful production exploring how a motor vehicle collision impacts on so many lives. There are seats left for your school. These schools have booked so far: Fortismere, St Thomas More, Harris Academy Tottenham, Greig City, Ada College for Digital Skills, Highgate Wood School

Road Safety News

Have you heard about Vision Zero? We are working to achieve Mayor Sadiq Khan’s aims for Vision Zero, so everything we offer and support will feed into this.
1)    Junior Travel Ambassador Scheme
Perfect to encourage your children to take ownership of the environmental aspects of travel, they gain incredible experience of project management and can represent your school at our upcoming Celebration Event on 5th February @ LAE Tottenham. Contact us for more information and training about this scheme.
2)    No parking at schools
We are currently auditing all the schools for improving the road safety. This means we have engineers attending every school to provide a report to say what they feel the best improvements could be. We welcome your views these will be added to our reports. As previously mentioned you will only be considered for a School Street etc if your school is actively promoting STARS active travel and has silver or gold accreditation.
Banners – If your No Parking Banner is not fit for purpose, please email smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk to request replacement/s.
3)    Be Bright Be Seen with the dark mornings and evenings and the winter break for the New Year, please make sure your parting comment is to choose to be safe: Wear bright colours, don’t hide in the darkness. Check out this activity created by  Gladesmore School too

Active Travel and STARS

We would like your support with a couple of extremely important features on STARS that are so useful to us.
The Hands Up Survey
Hands up survey
We need this updated information to help with the schools audits so please complete before end of term. If you cannot get your teachers to complete on line, please give them a deadline and a printed copy of the hands up survey. I am happy to help upload this.
Issues
Please let us know of any issues that you have in the vicinity of your school – anything that would prevent people walking or cycling or cause safety issues.
·         Are the pavements all broken and create enormous puddles when it rains?
·         Does the road flood, causing children to get soaked?
·         Is the guard rail broken and dangerous?
·         Are the zig zag lines (School Keep Clear) or yellow lines outside your school ignored, faded, or need a banner?
·         Is your cycle parking area overflowing or not used?
There are many more things that you and your teachers may have noticed. Resolving these issues could also count towards your consultation section on Stars.
Please collect information when you are consulting with your school community about travelling to school. Then upload it to Stars. If any urgent action is needed, please contact Frontline@haringey.gov.uk and cc smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk
STARS Celebration and Training Event and certificates
Unfortunately, TfL have had a hitch, they have sent half the certificates and stars but not all and I didn’t want them to go missing, so they will all be delivered in the new year.
Hold the Date
Our Celebration and Training Event for STARS is 5 February 2020 @ LAE Tottenham High Road (next to Spurs)
We are organising a fabulous extravaganza to celebrate all our amazing achievements and the 65 accreditations for our School Travel Plans. We are very proud of all our schools and the pupils who work so hard to keep the car use at under 20% for our borough. You are all invited, it will mainly be aimed at primary, but we can accommodate all.
We will be sending a link for schools to register for the event: two adults and up to four students. We will be holding two sessions on 5 February, from 9:30 to 12 and 12:45 to 3pm.
Lunch will be offered to both morning and afternoon attendees. This will probably be a buffet style and obviously cater for special dietary requirements.
The content of the event will be confirmed in January 2020.

School Streets – Travel Plans and Parking Permits

We know this is high on the agenda for a lot of our schools. We need you all to complete your Hands Up survey on this site too, please take a look and if you need support that contact me smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk
The assessment of each school in the borough is about to commence. An independent company will be visiting each primary school over the coming months. They will be assessing the parking situation and the general geography and signs and lines for each school, in line with our criteria. This will help us prioritise school street projects to where they will make a good impact and improve the health and wellbeing of both pupils and residents. Only schools that are active on STARS will be considered for the school street project. Don’t feel left out, anyone can do this, it is a free service and we support you. Please check to see who your School Travel Plan Coordinator is. They can help with and travel issues you think need to be looked at. Check out TfL Stars to see the accreditation status of your school.
If you have any comments to make about your school, please send them to Wendy Thorogood at smarter.travel@haringey.gov.uk and add them as an issue on TfL STARS.

Road Safety Week

Register on the Brake Road Safety Website to receive your FREE Action Pack for Road Safety Week http://www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk/action-pack or for your younger students Brake Zebra Day https://brakezebras.org/beep.
If you would like us to come and talk to your students about road safety, we have a limited number of spaces for assemblies. Or you could use this presentation and JTA recruitment to deliver the messages.

Cycling and bikes

Please remember to book you cycle skills sessions for students from age 9 and above, even secondary school and college! Plus, parents and staff at schools can take part too.  www.cycleconfident.com
In addition to this we are working with Peddle My Wheels for the following amazing offer:
Public Bike Markets at Tottenham Green Market on 3 November and 7 December. Bring along your unwanted bikes or buy one from them.

Try Before You Bike

In addition, we have organised Try Before You Bike, an exciting scheme supported by Haringey Council that allows you to hire a brand-new bike for from £10 a month until you either own or return the bike. A wide range of bikes are available including standard, electric and now children’s bikes– there is something for everyone!
Children’s bike – from £10 a month
Standard adult bike – £20 a month
Electric bike – £50 a month
Electric cargo bike – £100 a month
Adapted bike – £100 a month

Peddle My Wheels deliver the bike fully assembled TO YOUR DOOR or requested location (it could be your school) so gone are worries of buying online and having to assemble it yourself, or worrying about how you are going to get your bike from the bike shop to your house if it is too far to cycle!
On delivery of your new bike you will receive a personalised 2-hour cycle training session helping you to build confidence and familiarity with your new ride.  Peddle My Wheels also offer further guidance after your hire/purchase such as route suggestions or help with your commute.
If at any point you decide you no longer want the bike, you can cancel your hire and Peddle My Wheels will collect the bike from you with nothing more to pay
If you wish to sign up, please click through to Peddle My Wheel’s site for more information and to get started: https://www.peddlemywheels.com/try-before-you-bike

The lastest news from Smarter Travel

October is International Walking Month

A timely reminder to encourage all your new families to walk, not drive to the school. Please remember to collect the Hands Up Survey from all of your classes. Use this sheet or log onto STARS to open the survey and create a link to send to all tutors. If you can all do this now, we can complete our School Street Survey before the end of the year.

  •  Hari bear could be hiding in your school key stage one class somewhere (we lost two of our special Hari bears last year – is he with you?)
  • Contact Wendy Thorogood for the resources that cost nothing to get your key stage one pupils excited and moving, as well as reducing cars at the gate.
  • Contact Wendy to organise Orienteering in a park near your school, this would be a fun extra walking activity to get all the class out for an Autumn Activity.

Accreditations

You will soon be receiving an email with the Accreditation Stars that you have earned. These should be added to your school website, used in emails and letters, just like the Healthy Schools accreditation

Training

We want to hold training sessions with you and your new Junior Travel Ambassadors (JTA).  Please use this presentation and application forms to recruit your new team members.
We can come and present their JTA badges and help with their first assembly plan – this should be based on Be Bright and Be Seen.

Vision Zero

The Mayor of London and TfL have an ambitious plan to have Zero traffic related issues by 2040.
We have put together a great bundle of resources, please contact Halema.uddin@haringey.gov.uk to receive them. Let her know what your plans are to improve Road Safety awareness in your school.

Safe Drive Stay Alive 2020

Important message to every educational provider for students aged 16 and over.  We are proud to say we are supporting Safe Drive Stay Alive again so hold the date. The events will be held at The Bernie Grant Arts Centre on 16, 17 and 18 March 2020. Send your applications in as soon as possible. There are limited spaces, so book now to avoid disappointment.

STARS Training Sessions

If your accreditation is expiring this year or your school did not get accredited last year, don’t worry! We will be holding training sessions throughout the year, but the earlier you get involved, the higher your accreditation.
Walk Zones and School Streets are the hot topics. So, if you don’t have a walk zone and want one, email me to book a training session. The minimum requirement is that you have completed a Whole School Hands UP survey and it is on STARS.
School Streets will not be considered at your school unless you have at least completed Bronze level activities on STARS for this year. We will help you every step of the way.

Cycling

Continue to use Cycle Confident to book your students cycle skills lessons for bikeability and beyond. Ask about the Adult cycling sessions too.

Bike Markets and Try Before you Bike

We have commissioned Peddle My Wheels to operate bike markets in our borough. Bring along your unloved/outgrown bike and if they can make it road worthy, they will and offer it for sale at a bike market – you receive the proceeds. Their website has dates of all bike markets available.
The same company facilitate our residents to try out a bike and pay monthly on a rent to buy scheme. Check their website to see how this extremely easy scheme works.

Thursday 20 June is Clean Air Day

What is your school doing to highlight this important day? Air quality is high on our agenda, it affects everyone, especially the children in your schools. Clean Air Day is a good reason to ask parents and staff to try to leave their cars at home for one day to make a difference to the air quality.

  • Watch The Mulberry Primary’s Air Monsters vs Air Rangers short animation.

  • Research show that there is nine times more pollution inside a car than outside. Children arrive fitter and more alert if they actively travel to school.

  • Clean Air Day is a nationally recognised day, along with Car Free Day on 22 September.

  • Haringey Council has pledged to help schools, residents and groups organise temporary play street closures on this date.

Use these links to help with ideas to promote the day:

The latest news from Smarter Travel – do you need to update your travel plan?

School Travel Plans 2018/19  https://stars.tfl.gov.uk/

If your school is on the list below your school will lose your school travel plan status from September! You will have to remove the certificates, plaques and kitemarks from your walls and website, as they will be obsolete. Please contact Wendy Thorogood urgently to arrange for a session to update your school travel plan. As previously stated, we are looking at every school and assessing their suitability for School Street measures. If you do not have an up-to-date travel plan, this will affect the scoring of our assessments. It may also affect your application for essential user permits for parking in a CPZ.

Cycling

  • Our busy cycling time is just starting, with Bike Week running from 8 to 16 June.
  • Bikeability is delivering cycle training in schools around the borough. Please contact www.cycleconfident.com to secure your place, if you haven’t already. if your pupils have been trained, book a session for your colleagues – they won’t regret it.

Park-to-Park cycling event on 12 June

Join our fantastic Park-to-Park ride around the borough. Around 200 pupils and adults will cycle from their school to the start at Lordship Rec, before proceeding through Downhills Park and then on to Chestnuts. From here we will wend our way along Hermitage Road up to Green Lanes. We negotiate the junction with the support of our boys in blue and then cycle up the hill of Endymion Road to the Finsbury Park Gate where we will spend an hour having lunch and enjoying some team games and entertainment.

Back on the bikes, we will proceed along the Parkland Walk to Crouch End. Again, our bobbies will help us through the town and around on our way to Priory Park. Here the tradition is to cycle around in a glorious colour of hi vis, children and adults, ringing bells and smiling. The final stretch follows with us leaving the park and proceeding along Middle Lane turning into Nightingale Lane and ending up in the lower part of Alexandra Park. Everyone has an incredible time and the first thing the children say is, “Can we do it again next week please?”

Saddle and Sole Festival at Finsbury Park (our award winning), Sunday 16 June, 12 – 6pmFinsbury Park Festival of Walking and Cycling Leaflet

Please promote this event to your families and staff. We will be offering lots of free fun cycling and walking activities, along with scrummy food and free face-painting and a bouncy castle.

This annual tri-borough event brings in fabulous entertainment from the early cycle ride starting at the park to crazy bikes and Rollapaluzza, massages, as well as the inimitable machines created by Cyclone Works offering spin-a-painting and other bike-powered activities. We welcome the expertise of O’Donovan’s and the Metropolitan Police to highlight the dangers posed by lorries vs cyclists and pedestrians. The police will be security-marking cycles, plus all three boroughs will provide free bike maintenance.

It’s Father’s Day – what better way to celebrate than to enjoy a free day out with him?
